We have two children (2 1/2 and 12 months) whom we are raising in my wife's home country of Tajikistan. The children get along very well with their cousins here. They have no western peers. For the first time, they will be visiting (for 3 1/2 months) my home country, the USA. None of my siblings have children their age. We can not come to the US frequently. I am concerned that they establish emotional ties to my home country. Again, there are few westerners where we are settled. What would be important to do for children of this age during our US trip?

I don't really see any problem. They're just going to be visiting a while. I don't think there's really any need to do anything for them.

Since they are very young there's not too much to worry about. Children, especially young ones, are very flexible. You may want to prep them for American food. If your really concerned, then plan to share a tradition from your wife's country with them. Perhaps you can have some family over and prepare a native meal. Then the American side can do the same.

Thanks for your comments!
I'm not so much concerned for them during the trip to the USA. My concern is for later, when they are growing up in Tajikistan, how they will remember the USA; what emotional ties they can build with the USA, being as their ties to Tajik culture are so strong. Therefore, what can we do now to help then?

If you want them to have fun while they're here the amusement parks are always a big hit with children;esp. Disney World and Disney Land. Your children may be too young to really enjoy them yet, though, and they're really expensive. Six Flags is a lot cheaper and has areas for young children. Children usually like the Natural History Museum in Washington D.C....big animal skeletons, etc. and the Air and Space Museum (also D.C....planes hanging overhead, space capsules, etc.); though a little bit goes a long way with young children. Having fun is always a good memory :).

What state will you be visiting? Or will you be traveling around the U.S.?

There's a lot of historical places where you'll be. My family and I especially enjoyed Mt. Vernon....George Washington's plantation on the Potomac River. You're children might not get much out of visiting such places but they are very interesting. The Smithsonian in DC is also VERY good. I'm sure there's a lot to do where you're going. Googling a state usually brings up ideas.
