My grandson has a peanut allergy. His mother is extremely vigilant about making sure to read all the labels on everything he eats. Last night he ate a piece of candy that contains peanuts and peanut butter. He almost died. She had gone through all of his candy that he got while trick or treating....something I have never thought was a good idea on so many levels. She read the label on all of the candy that she wasn't already sure of. The piece of candy that contained the peanuts was Chick O Stick candy. The outside of the wrapper said that it contained coconut but not peanuts. The label is made of clear plastic and the ingredients are printed with a similar color as the candy. After she had gotten her son medical attention she looked through the candy wrappers that he had eaten and found the Chick O Stick wrapper. The peanuts were listed as an ingredient on the INSIDE of the wrapper!!!!! It would have never occured to me that there may be additonal ingredients listed on the inside of the wrapper. So...if you or someone you know has a peanut allergy....be aware that some ingredient labels are printed on both sides of the wrappers. I will be sending off an email to the candy company that produces these candies this morning. I do not want anyone else to go through what my daughter and her son went through last night. There are millions of pieces of that candy in the hands of children with peanut allergies.
After my daughter finished telling me about all that had happened last night, we had a conversation about Halloween and what it's really all about. She is never taking her children trick or treating again. I thought it had been made manditory that food items containing nuts were to be clearly labeled due to the high number of children that are allergic these days. There may have been a clear listing of the ingredients on the bag that contained the individual pieces of the candy but as it was being handed out piece by piece to the children there was no way to know that the peanuts were an ingredient unless you actually opened the wrapper. I just want to get the word out that there is a problem so this doesn't happen to anyone else.
