First i have to say i am glad your bother is paying the due price for his actions. That said, i also hope that you and the rest of the family are going to visit him. What he did was wrong and he is paying the price for it but he still needs his family to get through this.

Second, when he returns, i would not allow him back in the house except when there is a man that cares enough for you and your daughter present. As in someone that would give up his life for you and her. Forgiveness is good and right but stupidity can be fatal and if he gets hardened while in jail instead of repenting, he could very well be a danger when he gets back out.

Don't take my last the wrong way I am not saying that you are stupid but you are his sister which means there is a bond there regardless of what he has done. When he gets out forgive with your heart but use your mind. Do not allow yourself to be in that situation again.

I would also find out if the place he is at has a Chaplin. That person will have unprecedented access to your brother and is the one person there that will actually want him to succeed at being rehabilitated. Often times a family member of an inmate can talk to the Chaplin giving him insight to help. Use this resource if you can.

Remember also to be in constant prayer for him. He did something really dumb but he is still a creation of God and the Lord wants him. Jesus can do things within us that bring about remarkable change. The life of Chuck Colson is a perfect example from recent times. The bible is filled with people that have done terrible things and yet ended up serving God mightily. Moses immediately comes to mind. Moses was a murderer. He did not have to kill the egyptian to stop him. As the Son of Pharaoh's daughter Moses could have used other methods. He didn't and paid a heavy price. Even with that Moses was used, nay, called by God to do great things in the name of the Lord.

I do not know what God has in store for your brother but I do know that if your brother repents and is restored he will have a powerful testimony especially to those still in jail or prison.

I hope this brings you a measure of peace.

In Christ,

Bishop SEH

I am an alcoholic. First off, I certainly don't condone nor justify the actions your brother exhibited. I am assuming he was drinking when he did this? I haven't gone that far, but my last major drunk, I threw my wedding ring down in front of my wife and walked out of the house. This merely a reaction to a noise complaint...a police man came over and asked me to turn it down. My wife told me to stop drinking and quit being angry at the officer. I told her to sleep with the officer if she was going to defend him. I was out of control and that was so, so sick and wrong to do to my wife, who only ever loved me until I drained that love out of her. That may have cost me my marriage. I sought treatment the next day in all of my shame and sorrow for what I'd done, and have since reconnected with the Lord. As for your brother...have you spoken to him since this? Alcoholism is a real disease...and your brother (as well as me) showed it. That said, I hate the word "disease" because it seems to almost be a scapegoat. But the alcoholic mind is not at peace without booze added, let alone when the alcoholic is drunk. My mind was (and still is) very self-centered. I really believed that people were against me, that nobody could be trusted, and I perceived people and life as not being good enough and not caring about me. (Narcissistic) This kind of thinking ruled me. Add the booze, dynamite exploding. But I am responsible, as is your brother, for treating this illness. He is now very aware of his actions, and now he has to take action. My wife left me. Your brother is in jail. Both of us now have to accept consequences that we brought on. You can have a relationship with him that will build over time and proof of change. Forgiveness is one thing, but this does not mean, I don't think, that you open your door without reserve. My wife won't return to me without heavy duty proof of personal change. Your brother has to live with this and act accordingly if he is to receive your forgiveness, your daughter's and God's. There is a price he has to pay now, and he can be forgiven, but still has to accept that price. On a good side, as BishopSEH has said, he can turn this around and have powerful testimony to those who suffer from addictions. I was in a recovery home with 80 other alcoholics/addicts/gamblers. Some of the stories were devastating. Everyone on staff was a former client in this treatment home, and many of them had long since lost their families, and simply moved forward in God's grace and lived to have powerful testimony to God's abundant forgiveness and willingness to rebuild a life. I am in the same boat. How I treated my family was inexcusable, and that dark person I had become is now the pillar of my sober life in Jesus. I had to be brought to my knees...an empty house, my family not wanting me around anymore...I thought of hanging myself for awhile, but God kept me alive to make change. Your brother can do the same, and I am praying for all of you!
