I'm not defending anyone's advice or posts, but I do agree with the point that was made by some about perspective. Perspective is everything when we are depressed and at our wits end. If we never focus on the misery and suffering of others, we'll always have this erroneous belief that we are experiencing a uniquely tragic or horrible life. Something as simple as turning the tv on and watching 5 mins of world news can be life changing. Just listen to all the accounts of murder, rape, terrorist acts, plane crashes etc. The world is full of suffering. I think one of the best ways to help someone is to offer them a proper perspective. Most depressed people spend their time comparing themselves to others that are better off or more successful. It's not harsh or unloving to nicely suggest to a person that they consider the stories and plight of others who are less fortunate. It's a healthy mental balance.
