Guilt is of the devil. Conviction is of the Holy Spirit. If you feel condemned and less than, that is not of God. If you feel conviction that causes you to acknowledge the wrong you did and that creates a willing desire to change, but that doesn't condemn you or make you feel less, that is the Holy Spirit.
