Hi everyone,

I am dismayed and concerned to find out that St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, UK is allowing a rock band to perform there.

I believe it is a place to worship God alone and it is a mistake to let worldly performers come into Gods house for the purpose of their own self benefit!

I am sure there are many venues this rock group could perform at in London. St. Paul’s is not a village hall and God should not be put second to fit in with worldly demands.

Their music is not Christian and one of their songs is called “Jesus is a Rochdale Girl”. They are also being allowed to perform in “the crypt” area of the cathedral where people are buried. Here is a link to the story: Elbow to play gig at St Paul's Cathedral - Telegraph

I have emailed the Reverend Rendell regarding this, his email address is: [email protected]

There are also other people you can email with any concerns you may have regarding this on the Cathedral’s website: People at the Cathedral - St Paul's Cathedral, London, UK

I have since been told the following:

"The performance by Elbow is for a corporate event taking place in the crypt. As St Paul’s Cathedral receives little regular or significant funding from the Crown, Church or the State we rely on the income generated by tourism and commercial activities (including corporate events) to allow the building to continue to function as a centre for Christian worship, as well as to cover general maintenance and repair work.

This event takes place at the west end of the crypt beyond the Churchill gates. This point in the crypt marks the transition from the sacred to the secular – and this space is also where our shop, lavatories, café are located."

This reminds of when Jesus said "My Father's house is a house of prayer. You've turned it into a den of thieves!" (I'm paraphrasing) Maybe not a den of thieves, but a den of loud, excited people.

Hi JennaLou,

The thought comes to mind that some bands are more "worldly" than others, if you get my drift. Since I am not familiar with this band (see my age), I don't know how bad this particular group is, but I answered "No" to your poll.

This situation, in my opinion, is typical of many modern houses of worship that have compromised their principles in the name of "furthering the Gospel". Their reasoning seems to be, "The end justifies the means. If this concert brings in some money which we will dedicate to our ministry, it is all right to have it on our premises."

I personally believe that this is wrong thinking. God never compromises His principles. Churches should not, either. Throughout the Scriptures, God has promised to meet our needs if we love and follow Him. In Matthew 6, verses 31 through 35, Jesus said "So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." If this is true for individuals, how much more must it be for churches?

Therefore, I believe that any churches that compromise their principles for the sake of generating income are disrespecting God. And that can't be good.

The thing I worry about is this trend will spread farther then England and people will say ,'if they did it there let's do it here in America' , and next thing you know they are marching for some kind of rights to make use of any church without even permission from those people /if so possible..It has happened in the last 16 years or more with many 'new' trends. Why this happens I find strange but especially if it can start in other kinds of churches even if on any property next to. Compromise will lead to more of the same as it is. Like newly smoking people think they 'can quit anytime'.

Let me play devil's advocate... We no longer worship in a temple, that was done away with when Jesus died on the cross and the temple curtain was ripped in 2. Now WE are the temple. There will always be injustice in this world and yes, even in church. What matters is how YOU respond to God's Spirit and how YOU worship with in the temple, your body.

My other consideration is this: is this a battle worth fighting? Ok, so put all your effort and energy into keeping this band out of the cathedral. So what? Will that save any souls? Will that change the heart of the cathedral decision makers? No. Put your energy into something that is going to make a difference for God's kingdom--like evangelism.

That's my 2 cents.

I have no problem with this.. I don't know the band but if the church wants to use it in that way I'm sure they've prayed about it

I agree with this.

We are the temple of christ, not a church. This said, I don't think we want to allow activities that are actively against christ, which a rock band isn't necessarily. Aka I don't think we should hire it out as a brothel... discretion should be used.

If one believes a "Christian" rock band in a Cathedral is going to save souls they need to seriously asses their degree of spiritual discernment.

If someone thinks hunting down threads about Christian rock and making snide comments about peoples spiritual maturity is going to effect positive change they need to seriously asses Their degree of spiritual discernment.
