For what it's worth, I have two close friends who are catholic and as far as I can tell, are saved. I asked them about this Mary business and they said they ask Mary to intercede with Jesus on their behalf. They mentioned the miracle of turning the water into wine and how Mary interceded with Jesus on behalf of the party goers.

They said it was not worship of Mary but just asking his mom for a little support on their behalf. Though I don't agree with it, I couldn't be too critical of that kind of attitude.
