But that was as far as it ever went, and it was always told WHY it was important to obey and WHY it was we were getting punished. We were also told before what punishment we could expect if we were disobedient. I was never surprised when I got punished or with what punishment I got.

And spanking is okay if you aren't using your full force on a child....
