None that i went to were heavily into all that. It was taught, but not disproportionately. But that doesn't mean i didn't still have my fears about it. Actually about a year ago i was out of state when all phone service went out. No phone, no internet, i mean NO internet, nothing. I woke my friend and theirs was out too (different cell company). I was so panicked that it was some government conspiracy and the soldiers were being dispatched to drag people out of their homes. haha. Turns out it was some huge outage over the whole east coast that was fixed by the next morning hahaha. My imagination can be excessively vivid at times.
Those legalistic churches often border on cultism. I went to a home church for a few times that was like that. They prayed for me and insisted God had done something in me (I couldn't tell it) and that i had to change my shirt. I humored them, but didn't buy it. When it came time to leave i put my (Christian) shirt back on and they told me by doing that i just undid everything God just did in me. 0.o
I quit going from a bunch of weird stuff, and naturally shared my experiences. When they found out i was 'talking badly about their church' a few of them showed up at my door and while nothing was overt it was clear they were intended to be threatening.
A year later they got in trouble they got put on the cult watch for helping a 16 year old girl run away from her Christian parents because her parents didn't approve of their 'church'.

haha, yeah. It's always been an uphill battle, though. Especially since my tastes tended towards the extreme end of the music spectrum. Fortunately i didn't face a lot of personal backlash as a result.
Though i was in leadership at my then primary churches youth group, and looked like a metal head (hair to my waist, combat boots, cut off jean shorts, chain wallet to my knees, black band shirts) and this one mom became very suspicious of me. She would grill her kids after picking them up, asking questions about me every week hahaha.
She eventually came up and worked her way into a conversation a group of us were having. I could tell something was up with her, but hadn't been aware of her spying haha. She eventually started directing conversation towards me. When it was all said and done she ended up being a good friend and i even watched her kids for her often (single mother, worked nights, 3 kids) and basically could walk into her house as if i lived there haha.
But, like you, i'm glad i don't have to like all of it either /looks at all CCM and cringes

Hmm... I'm not sure what year you started listening, but that First Strike album came out in 1989. That is actually close to the end of that genres (hair metal) popularity. Styper started in.. 83 i believe.
Stronghold (not popular that i know of) put out an album in 82. 83 had Scarlet (hair metal) and Heavens Force (thrash) releases. 84 was seeing more releases and on and on. And that's just using my limited albums of the time period/genre that i have. It's not a time i knew much about what was being released. No doubt those who were could provide plenty more. 85 started showing demo's of some of the bands that would get bigger. By the time i got saved (98 i think) the bigger bands were already established with a few albums under their belt. A few short years later grunge came out and the scene went bye bye.
It just wasn't your thing haha. Or you weren't around people that encouraged your interest in it, probably more to the point.
I know when pop punk came out it seemed like everyone i was around was into it and metal was 'dated'. I sort of got into it, but soon as those people disappeared so did my interest. Now i count that as among the lowest forms of music, down there with country

My reason for not liking the song? Hmm... i tried to block it out, so let me try again haha.
Listening... it start out fine.
I think the lyrics seem too cheesy for one thing. And his voice begins grating on me. And the music overall doesn't have much kick to it. It's a bit tame, flat, even for the genre. Compare that band to this bands demo of the same genre from just one previous.

Good that you weren't in the worst of some of the church teachings on prophesy, end times, etc.. but it does sound like you got enough of a dose that it sunk deep and stuck with you. I can totally understand why you would have been freaked out to lose phone service, etc. I would have too!! True confession (which is also kind of embarassing, but...) I hate when helicopters or airplanes fly over really low or hover around. I try not to let myself be afraid of things (I do a LOT of praying sometimes.. about that specifically) but war is a real thing and the end times are a real thing.. and it's hard not to feel nervous sometimes about things like that out of the ordinary. I'm probably making myself sound like some kind of freak now, although I really hope not.

We were involved in house churches like that when I was growing up. Once they started getting crazy my parents would take us out, but it was still exposure to a whole lot of stuff. I think the scariest thing about those groups was that there was a lot of truth in them too.. so it was easy to corrupt the truth with their twists of things. Lots of prosperity gospel junk-- unfortunately we must not have had enough "seed faith" because we always struggled for money. (lol but not really, you know?).

"It just wasn't your thing haha. Or you weren't around people that encouraged your interest in it, probably more to the point.

Interesting. I'd never thought about it like that. Maybe it was more the opposite side of that same truth? I think I was around people (guys from the youth group whom I had crushes on) who were really into the heavier music and so I took an interest in it even though it wasn't my thing. Of course, I did really like some of and that stuck with me. I'm not into what I'd call screechy music, but if it has actual melody and merit to the lyrics I can get attached to some of it.

"Now i count that as among the lowest forms of music, down there with country  "

hahahahahaha too funny!!

"My reason for not liking the song? Hmm... i tried to block it out, so let me try again haha."

again... hahahahaha you're funny ;)

I hadn't heard of the Rage of Angels.. looked them up and read about them while I was listening. I wasn't good at making out the words but I'm out of practice with that style of music so will have to give it a fair listen again after I've had some rest.

Btw, wow about the church being put on cult watch-- although it sounded like they did need to be...
--and cool that that mom did come around and really got to know and trust you. :) yikes at her spying on you before but I can understand her being protective of her kids until she knew you were a good guy/ safe person for them.

I saw that album earlier too. But I don't have it. I listened to it briefly but it didn't jump out at me either. Heh.

I don't live too far from an airport so I hear planes all the time. And from age... 11 to 21 I lived even closer to an international airport.
I was in IL once and slept in my car one night and realized that black helicopters kept flying low past the houses. I'd been hearing weird noises there for a while and even discussed it with someone I was visiting. We weren't sure what it was. That night I realized it was the copters. So it was most nights, low flying, late at night, black unmarked choppers with no airport around. Freaked me out ever since.
I looked it up later and saw people all over the country for years making the same claims.

When it comes to truth I heard something once. If you give someone directions and give one wrong turn, the person won't arrive. So it only takes one error to mislead.

From the time I was first exposed to prosperity teachings I was against it. I'd had a crush on this new chick at our youth and one week she showed up sick and when I commented on it she freaked out and said she doesn't claim that... and was Very, Very adamant about it.
I asked my youth pastor what it was about and he explained it to me. I rolled my eyes and lost interest in her after that haha.

Define "screechy music" that's a term I'm not familiar with haha. And if you use the term "screamo" then I may have to block you =P

Yeah, I was actually a bit offended she took such a roundabout approach, and making such judgments. She was apparently convinced that "someone that looked like that Had to be up to no good". -.-

I've switched to my phone, so my responses have shrunk some. Haha.

When I saw the title of the thread, "early Christian music", I thought it was going to be about Gregorian chants. You know - early music, like 10th century!

As I read all the band and performing artists' names, I recognized pretty much all of them! I got saved in 1980, and had most of the albums. I still have Twila Paris on my Christmas play list!

We moved up to northern BC, and didn't have any Christian music stations. But we moved down south to a few minutes north of the American border, and I listened to KLYN in Lyndon, Wash. The CRTC in Canada wouldn't allow Christian music stations. Fortunately, that changed.

Anyway, good thread!

Hi again, Ms Gracie! :D by the time you get this Good Morning!! :coffee:

I loved your idea about us posting/sharing our fave songs from various artists (at the same time). I think that sounds like fun!
And yes, I do like song of Hillsong's music.. although I didn't know that there are SO MANY different splinter groups of them!! As I said I do like quite a few of their songs but to name a couple I love Draw Me Close to You... and... You Are My All in All. Also From the Inside Out is a HUGE fave of mine so will share it. :)

Btw, sorry that I had to run like I did this morning. Thankfully the day ended up going so much better than how it'd begun and seemed to be going. Yayyyy!!! (Thank you, Jesus!! :) ). Anyway, thanks for understanding. <3

Hi Jen! Mornin'!! :D Thanks for this!! Hehe I totally understand and I was going to reply saying I understand the circumstances but I was a bit busy. Lo and behold, you replied! You're so sweet...so thank you! :)

And I must say....I LOVE FROM THE INSIDE OUT!!!! IT'S MY FAVOURITE SONG from Hillsong United!!! Oh myyy...Have you listened to Oceans (Where Feet May FAIL) before? Of course, you haVE!!!!! Who hasn't? :p But anyway, I LOVE THAT SOOONG SO MUCH!! Sorry....about my caps but it's an expression of excitement, lol! :D

Hope all i swell with you and I'll be praying whatever you may be going through...God will give you His utmost strength. Remember you're never alone. Here's a song by Hillsong Young and Free I absolutely LOVE....hopefully, it will give you some hope knowing you're not alone.

Anyhoo, I look forward to posting favourite songs with you! Here's another one I have recently fallen in love with.

lol about your phone. yeah, I"m like that. I even do my "text" messages through messenger so that I can type them bc I am such a slow (hate) doing the little phone touch typing thing. ugh lol.

and that really did stink about that mom. she shouldn't have mistrusted you because of your looks.. she should have just mistrusted you because she was a mom who was being careful and looking out for her kids. same, but different.

Interesting point about errors. but that does put a lot more pressure on for people to be very clear and very correct so as not to mislead with even one mistake bearing such importance.

Your responses shrunk, mine have less capital letters LOL .. pffft at correctness sometimes. I still haven't been to sleep so I'm not really caring so much about grammarly type things lol.

LOL I wouldn't dare define it as screamo-- for one, my niece was really into that at some point so I know not to criticize it ;) ... and two, I'm not sure what it really is anyway. LOL

when I think of screechy I can hear what I mean in my head but I don't have the words... lol maybe I'll get inspired when I do sleep and will be able to come back and explain perfectly... (ha! probably not... )

I've really enjoyed our conversation tonight. Hopefully we can either continue it or start another soon. For now though I'll wish you a good morning as I head on to bed. (I am SO genuinely getting too old for the hours I keep! lol I used to work night 12 hr night shifts and I've never been the same since. lol) ttfn (ta ta for now -- as said by Tigger of Winnie the Pooh, in case you aren't up on your children's classics. lol.)

I am usually typing on my phone (despite being bad at it), but things tend to be shorter since it's not as easy.

Eh. I'm not that worried about her. Now I look back at it as pretty funny. I just wished she'd handled it better is all. But it still worked out well in the end.

I think the real pressure is it makes you have to look at yourself more and evaluate your own beliefs and determining if its what you want it to be, or what's right. What's the point in communicating well if you are communicating the wrong thing?
But my main intent was on the need to be wary of accepting teaching from ministries and churches. Due to the discussion we were having.

Actually the term screamo is nails on a chalkboard to metal heads. It borders on blasphemy. Cringe factor of 11. A big middle finger and an F You. Well, you get the idea haha.
Eventually a genre did form that fit the term, but it's not metal.

So... did those words ever come to you?

And, no, on not too up on childhood classics. And was never too big of a Pooh fan.

You could say this is a little screechy.

Umm.. yeah. I'd put that on the screech spectrum o_O. I probably shouldn't have used the term if I couldn't explain or define it, but I do know when I mean when I hear it. I like to be able to understand the lyrics--at least be able to make them out here and again. I think the screech factor with me has more to do with the wailing guitar, especially when it's on the higher end of sound. It isn't actually meant as music snobbery, though. I have just always had problems with migraines (and headaches) and some sounds just set it off for me (and, to be quite honest, it isn't just the screechier music.. it can be anything that would hit just right for me. Thankfully that is better controlled for me now.) As far as style and sound, I can't say that the song you just shared really grabbed me.

lol about screamo. I had no idea. It was just too overwhelming for me so I never gave it a fair chance personally. As far as my niece though I was supportive of her love for it and enjoyed hearing her talk about the groups and music that she liked.

"I think the real pressure is it makes you have to look at yourself more and evaluate your own beliefs and determining if its what you want it to be, or what's right. What's the point in communicating well if you are communicating the wrong thing?"

true. good point. and I really like the way you put that.

and LOL at your breakdown of the relationship of screamo to a metal head LOL!!!

too bad about Pooh. you should do some remedial reading to buff up your children's classics skillz :D Winnie the Pooh stories are SO good <3

Those are both REALLY good, thanks for sharing them! :) Tenth Ave North is a fave of mine-- hadn't heard that song before though. Listening to it again now-- the acoustic version this time. "Lord you don't need me but somehow you want me... " <3 And yes, Love Oceans, too! :D

And thank you for your prayers! I actually do have some crazy stuff going on -- always it seems anymore -- as well as a heartbreak that I'm trying to survive (bc sometimes that's all you CAN do is hold on to God). Nights have been especially hard for me and I have a lot of trouble sleeping- so sometimes I just can't... and then other times I totally crash. Just really having a hard time getting that regulated but again.. sometimes you just do what you can and what you have to to get through until it gets easier.

Anyway, thanks for sharing those songs. :) Here are a couple (ok, three! LOL ;) ) of my favorites by them.

You just eliminated over half the music I listen to haha. Ba-humbug.
I can't help but suspect your tastes coincide with your migraine restrictions =P
Yeah, I didn't anticipate you'd care much for that. But I still think it's a great song. So =P

Gave what a fair chance? Screamo? Doubt you've heard it. It's not a very popular genre. Mostly underground. And not too good. Plenty of better stuff out there. Or perhaps you meant the better genres haha.

I used to get daily headaches. Then one day I went to the ER for pain in my forearms and was diagnosed with high blood pressure. They told me it was so high they were afraid I might die in the ER.3 days in the hospital getting treated and monitored and my headaches, and arm pain, went away. I was maybe 29. Fun times. 0.0

Thanks. I've been known to be a wordsmith. Used to write a lot as a teen. I used to be pretty good with words. Now my mind is lazy haha.

Screamo... /dies a little inside

I'll pass. Poohs voice... so irritating. And I'd say it was rather syrupy, even for it's time. Uninteresting characters. Bland stories. Even Tigger wasn't too interesting. He stood out amongst a bland cast is all. Which isn't saying much.
And isn't Pooh a guy... so why does he have a girls name? Winnie. And what is a Pooh. Well, in this context.
Though he was rather effeminate with that high voice. I just realized Pooh was a 2018 Democrat. Gender confused. An addict. Walked around pantsless and his best friend was a young boy? Ok. This is getting disturbing...

I didn't mean to sound like I was knocking your music (or to knock it). It just isn't my thing. But I'm glad it's out there for those who do prefer and love it. I'm always glad when there is a Christian alternative within a genre because then the people who enjoy it can do that while getting a message that challenges or lifts them in their faith.

I'm so glad that you went to the ER when you did. It sounds like you were right on the verge of a massive heart attack or stroke. So it's stayed controlled since then?

So sad about Winnie the Pooh! LOL He probably has a very manly name like Winston, but nicknames can be difficult. lol I do agree about his voice. It is irritating-- high and a bit whiney. LOL @ your final summation of him! LOL I think it is a good set of stories for small children, something kind and gentle but also with small adventures. Everyone needs to start somewhere. :) I guess that is why it holds such a special place with me, certainly not because I find it particularly exciting now. well, ok.. maybe I DO still enjoy them, though. probably mostly because of the music LOL.

and I"m glad that my niece outgrew her excitement of Screamo. Other than this conversation with you I haven't thought about it in years.

Fun times. 0.0

Winnifred. it can be either a man's or a woman's name iirc
in the cartoons i thought he had a sort of W.C. Fields air about him

i get migraines too, have for a long time. but i like brutal, wall-of-sound unblack metal. when i get a migraine, i feel like i need to push or pinch at my head where it hurts, like pushing the headache into a point, to focus it. like somehow that makes it easier to deal with even tho it doesn't actually lessen the pain. i think maybe the high-pitched, screeching kind of sounds in certain winter-metal kind of soundscapes reminds me of that, and helps me focus in a similar way. kind of hard to explain; i'll have to think more about it because i've never tried putting it into words before.

for sure not to push some other religion ((or philosophy, as some of my teachers would insist, not religion)) -- but have you ever heard of/read 'the tao of pooh' or 'the te of piglet' ?
two really interesting books explaining some fundamental principles & language of taoism / daoism using pooh & piglet as examples.

It's been a long time, but actually yes. Was a little concerning how well it all seemed to fit. I don't really remember anything about it now, other than that impression that it'd left me with... and that it exists.

So sorry to read of your severe headaches/migraines. Do you still have them now? I went through a time when I had a constant headache for over 2 years straight, no reprieve from it. At the very best it would settle into what most people would call a "bad headache". Thankfully I found a Dr. who was finally able to give me some help and I only have them occasionally now-- mostly when I'm overtired or sinus related.

It was just a joke, no need to get all serious about it.

I find the raw/primitive stuff makes me tense. Even the couple I like I can only handle for so long. So much of it is droning and high pitched. Two things that can irritate me.
The more produced and symphonic sounds are easier for me, but still not a big preference. Though the IDEA of bm sounds great, the reality of it I just can't sonically do.

I'm not sure you got my "ugly" comment in the other thread. Or perhaps you did and just didn't respond. It was a hint though haha.
