I probably have the most of Tchaikovsky's music, but I also love Ravel, Bizet, Rimsky-Korsakov, and others. I also like more modern stuff like Zimmer, and the way The Piano Guys perform recent pieces in the classical style.

But I also like rock, hymns, a little country, and pretty much every style of music except rap and techno.
I like Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony. It is a favorite.

The 5th is my favorite. I'm not sure if I've ever heard the entire 6th, though.

This version is just a smidgen faster than the one I like best, but I couldn't find a slower one on youtube.

My classical favs are Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Saint-Saens, Chopin, and Lizst.

My Jazz faves, I could go on forever...dave brubeck, george gershwin, scott joplin, count basie, miles davis, monk, gillespie, freddie green, art tatum, danny gottlieb, beth gottlieb, emmet cohen.

i also have a mini obsession with ballet...for me it's just the perfect combination of music and movement.

Ballet is obscene.

It sounds like you and I would agree on the Classicals (Romantic classical). IMHO, great (as defined by my enjoyment) is not so much defined by genre as by the greatest works in each genre. For example, there must be a ton of painful to hear (or at least bored out your gourd) classical piano-teacher inflicted recital music. But Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano concerto is sublime. Scott Joplin, the great rag time composer! I love it if it is played (by my taste) right -- which means not fast and with a lot of expression, even rubato. Joplin IMHO was able to combine what seems like a light happy sound on the surface with an underneath pathos or sadness, like his Magnetic Rag.

Gershwin is a brilliant hybrid between jazz and classical, at least in some of his compositions.

But you left out band organ music, my favorite genre, merry-go-round music, as for example Blaze Away.

Now I will share with you a real favorite -- do you deem it classical?

For those who really like Classical music - and I'll include things that sadly don't seem mainstream anymore like Jazz, was this music that you grew up with so it always seemed familiar and "normal" to you? Or is it something you discovered later in life and you either liked it right away or it became an acquired taste? And you can like "older" types of music like Classical or Jazz and also like contemporary music, pop music, whatever - this question isn't about that.

Growing up, I was exposed to all sorts of music, including Classical and Jazz and various ethnic music. My sister and a few people in my extended family were trained as Classical musicians. I don't know if my situation is typical or not for people who like music that isn't what most would call mainstream.

I got my appreciation mostly from playing myself...I was classically trained on piano as a child, played piano and percussion in symphonic, concert, marching, and jazz bands and ensembles right up until my first few years in college. My mother felt every little girl should take piano lessons, so that's what got me started. I'm still incredibly passionate about playing piano as a hobby, but love to go to the symphony, jazz performances, ballets, etc whenever and wherever I can. If I have a child, one thing I'm not compromising on - my daughter or son WILL take piano lessons.

When melancholy strikes give me Beethoven's sonatas or Liszt, Gershwin when I'm playful. (For a really fun jazz compilation check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkEIerfv2Vc )

I also seem to be drawn towards classical musicians whose names I cannot spell like: tchaikovsky, rachmaninoff.

At one point I really liked Debussy but then someone poisoned my perspective by regularly calling it elevator music and it
tainted my view. Haters.

Before there was ever such a thing as a "chill pill", there was classical music. *lol* Classical music is perfect when you just want to relax and chill out. :)

Vivaldi is my personal fav.
This lady gets on my nerves though...

Mostly came across it on my own.

Hellooo: How could I forget to mention Gershwin? I'm mildly addicted to Rhapsody in Blue.
