Re: Like Dub-Step, Sick Beats, & Electronica...but wanting to keep it Christian, too?

For instrumental music, if you study music in college, you'll learn of the concept of ethos (different than the ethos, pathos, and logos concepts spoken about in psychology, philosophy, and public speaking...). Ethos, in music, is the emotional impact the sound of music can have upon an individual. Hence, or for example, that music has the power to make one sad, happy, angry, inspired...and this study has long been capitalized upon by the media industry, as well as many speakers.

In any case, the extremes of this are that certain music could even sway an inviduals heart toward good or evil. The spiritual applications being the music has the power to heal or injure, corrupt or refine, etc... To some extent, I believe and have seen the effects of this in my own life, and the lives of others.
I believe the key thing in here is this:
Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

So if there is disharmony or other such, it better be used in truth (aka use it to describe the wicked or oppression by the world, etc).
Rare are such songs were it happens to be so though.

Re: Like Dub-Step, Sick Beats, & Electronica...but wanting to keep it Christian, too?

the EDM Audio Bible (project of Vance Parella) has started uploading Proverbs!

above is a link to what he had already accomplished earlier - the book of Matthew - so far the first three chapters of Proverbs are complete. each consists of the ABV version of the scripture, read by Cristian Paduraru and accompanied by (very good) EDM music performed by various Christian artists

links:

Proverbs Chapter 1

Proverbs Chapter 2

Proverbs Chapter 3

i'm expecting more to appear on his soundcloud page soon :)

the Lord is my song and my joy!

Re: Like Dub-Step, Sick Beats, & Electronica...but wanting to keep it Christian, too?

Wow! What a way to get the Word. A minute ago, while my wife and 14 year old daughter were watching a movie, I unplug my headphones for a few seconds so they could hear this. My daughter immediately sat up and asked, "What are you doing on 'soundcloud?'" My wife asked, "What is that?" I replied to both, "I'm listening to the bible, Proverbs Chapter 1."

I'm gonna pump this up tomorrow...oh yeah! Gonna show 'em the old man's still got some thump. Awesome! Thanks, brother.

Just stumbled across this... it's pretty freaking awesome... takes a little time but once it gets going it's good.

Re: Like Dub-Step, Sick Beats, & Electronica...but wanting to keep it Christian, too?

Honestly, if I had the equipment I'd make more stuff like this, though I've never quite considered it more than musical noise, good to listen to when you need something different, but overly processed and without a real value system otherwise.

That having been said, while it might be easy enough to imagine coming up with in one's mind, putting it together is the hard part. for instance, for autotune of this caliber to work properly one must have at the very least something called relative pitch, which is something that requires immense ear training, especially if you're learning it later in life. Autotune is nothing more than a computer guessing notes based on a musical scale that is assigned ahead of time. If the vocalist hits a note that isn't quite on the scale, the software or plugin will correct it to whatever it finds is a possible match based on that scale, which leaves a lot of openings for error, since not all possible notes are used in any one scale, but the voice is not restricted to what it can sing.

it gets even worse if the person trys to sing with the intent of flowering their vocals or adding character or style as is the case with blues vocalists to sing in a particular way to showcase emotion. Pitch correction software isn't smart enough to know how to handle such matters, and while the techies can step in and snap the notes to their proper locations it's not a practical solution.

Truth is that many of the people who have been made famous through autotune can actually sing, but they've been taught by the record label to hate their voices because it makes money. It is not, as many people believe, a tool that can make anyone a great vocalist.

And that's just part of the process in this case. Beyond that there's compression, reverb and chorusing effects, volume leveling and equalization, filtering, unwanted noise suppression, looping, mixing, not all in that particular order, and only the job of those involved in audio production.

to conclude, while I have a decent setup for the time being, I'd never attempt to produce anything of this complexity on it, since most of my equipment is better suited for live performances and kind of old at any rate. Anyone want to fork over some $20000? I promise I'll make more of this as soon as you do, along with any other ideas you might have!
You can make this sort of stuff using software like FruityLOOPs, and download some VSTS, and you can tweak and change patterns and add your won beats,

Re: Like Dub-Step, Sick Beats, & Electronica...but wanting to keep it Christian, too?

For real! Pay about $150 for a pretty good off-lease Thinkpad from ebay, get Reaper for $60 (that was the price last time I bought it) and troll the KVRaudio lists for some good freeware instruments and effects. Or send me a PM and I'll tell you the ones I've found that are good. And freesound.org has all the samples you need to make beat tracks.

The downside is since anyone can do it with a laptop and a program, everyone is doing it... and most of them don't really have anything worth saying in their songs. The first step in making a song is having something to say.

Im confused if 95% of this stuff has no lyrics, what makes it anymore christian than say hardwell or avicii or skrillex?

Only worry if the beats get stuck in your head:

I would say the spirit of God in the music would make it more Christian. As an example: in artists music you can feel the spirit moving, by lyrics or maybe the way the drums hit and either make you want to cry or shout out to God, dubstep is no different just a more difficult genre to work with because its mainly instrumental.
