So I read a yahoo new's article today talking about the rise of atheist churches.
The article was pretty sad.

"On Sunday, the inaugural Sunday Assembly in Los Angeles attracted several hundred people bound by their belief in non-belief. Similar gatherings in San Diego, Nashville, New York and other U.S. cities have drawn hundreds of atheists seeking the camaraderie of a congregation without religion or ritual."

Thats a lot of people who have been misguided, mislead, and who need prayer. Then the article goes on to say,

"They don't bash believers but want to find a new way to meet likeminded people, engage in the community and make their presence more visible in a landscape dominated by faith."

I sure would like to see a landscape dominated by faith! The only faith I seem to see is satan worship, and faith in oneself.

Oh, it gets even better,
"Hundreds of atheists and atheist-curious packed into a Hollywood auditorium for a boisterous service filled with live music, moments of reflection, an "inspirational talk" about forgotten — but important — inventors and scientists and some stand-up comedy."

Just out of curiosity, What kind of music do they sing?
Oh it tells you ''renditions of "Lean on Me," ''Here Comes the Sun" and other hits that took the place of gospel songs."

And what exactly is the point of all this? Glorify man, not God? Doesn't it seem more logical to seek the truth rather than to create your following, and follow the following?

Every one has questions I feel about their religion. I had questions myself at one time. But it didn't take to long to find real answers and discover that history not only backs my religion, but when following what God commands me to do, How evident he is in my daily life!

I know its a blessing that God made it supper easy for me to find the truth. I was born in the USA, I could have been born in a country where there is no religious freedom. I have christian parents, I could have been born into a family of any of the many faiths. I could list Gods blessings on and on, So yes I was very fortunate that He made it so easy for me to find him.

I am just amazed at how many of these people have the same information available to them, But chose not to believe.

The history of the bible, and everything in it so amazing! To not believe I think would be scary!

The atheist church has just come to Australia too, I can see why people want to do it though. They don't believe in God but people like to belong to something, they like to feel loved and accepted. Unfortunately if it wasn't for God showing himself to me I wouldn't know the truth. Praise God for his holy spirit, we pray Holy spirit fall on these atheist churches and reveal the truth to them. Remember Paul he hated Christians all things are possible with God go Jesus. :)

Better to have hard core atheists in their own churches rather than have them overrun our denominations.

Judging by events at the last Democratic National Convention, your local Democratic Party unit might be worth a try if you seek fellowship outside areas with atheist congregations.

what makes this a mega church? A couple hundred people? The average church size in america is 100...200 is not a mega church.

I found socialization to be a big positive in my life, and when I lacked it I felt alone and sad while around others I felt a lot better about life. Perhaps these athiests are looking for some friends who share a common belief and wish to discuss things that are important to them. Some could be in a family and or friendship circle that is all different then them in terms of belief and maybe they are looking for some people with a common belief. As someone who goes to church things i find some of the socializing quite enjoyable, perhaps these athiests feel the same way at there gathering. I wish the best for them.

well honestly after reading everyone's comments on this i have really just one thought and it is this i no longer get in a debate or try to prove my God or even judgement as far as the consequences of the atheists choice or free will because basically i have the faith and power of belief that my prayers in this matter will be not only heard but also achieved by His Almighty power and grace but i also have realized as i have gotten older this small yet huge tidbit which is that no matter how long or how deep that mankind tries or even Satan for that matter attempts to cover up or try to bury the truth it ALWAYS has a way of coming out and being discovered so i will do the very best i can which is one leave it my Father's very capable hands and also as His servant do my part as well with my prayers and faith that goes along with and speak the truth with confidence not arrogance and study daily that said truth so i will be prepared for those individuals that do cross my path insomuch that it will be His words, and wisdom that greets their ears and heart, for what You have found to be good in Your eyes so be it Lord, Amen

I was an atheist before. But I never did drugs, I can count on my fingers and toes the number of women I slept with ( of course I wish I never did that ), and I got drunk just a few times, and when I say drunk it's not like what I saw in some documentaries when people got drunk until they start vomiting and loose consciousness and never recall what they said or did. I recall all what I said or did because I never drunk too much. Now, I drink very rarely.
It's been months since the last time I got a small drink of liquor, though I prefer red wine.

Well, I was an atheist before, but I always thought there was some kind of supreme intelligence behind all the incommensurate complexity of life and the universe.
So I find kind of stereotypical and wrong to imply that all atheists believe in nothing.

Remember, even the Greeks Paul visited at Athens believed in an Unknown God.

It's written : " Sha’ul stood up in the Council meeting and said, Men of Athens: I see how very religious you are in every way!23 For as I was walking around, looking at your shrines, I even found an altar which had been inscribed, ‘To An Unknown God.’ So, the one whom you are already worshipping in ignorance — this is the one I proclaim to you. "

Acts 17:22-23 ( CJB, Complete Jewish Scriptures )

to be fair,

the Greeks were hardly atheists. they were pantheists. to the nth degree, no less - they even had altars to whatever gods they might not be aware of -- hence "unknown god"

also to be fair,
an atheist who believes in "some kind of supreme intelligence / creator entity"
is hardly an atheist. he's just not honest with himself about the condition of his theology, IMO.

now to be honest,
i've never met an atheist who was truly "atheist" -- rather, all that i know are idolaters who don't understand what it means to 'worship' or what the true nature of an 'idol' is. the godless make gods of themselves.

back on topic (sort-of) -- these aren't atheists. they are humanists idolizing ritual.
