ANY 5 year period in World History, and you will find the same thing going on...........As for your Headlines, best I can tell, either you think Russia IS THE WORLD, or those were the most suited to the proposal in the OP?
How are the various Nations in North, Central, and South America responding to Russia preparing for war? Are they ALL building GREAT WALLS, or some such, or great Naval fleets or thousands of Soldiers and massing them on their borders?
How about other areas?
The WORLD is surely a mess, and has always leaned towards warfare, but the OP was a wee bit dramatic in my opinion.
Now, if you will excuse me..........there is a Gun Show down the street and I need to stock up on Ammo, and various survival gear before them durn Ruskies INVADE!

While it is true that there is too much focus on .... uhm .... spectacle as you call it, and not enough on what is going on, I think the same is true for most "western nations". You'd shake your head if you saw the Norwegian news...
Sure, there is stuff about the war in Syria..... there is even more about the US election, and yet more about the "scandal" of a Norwegian athlete being caught using a medicine which is listed as an illegal drug, and healthy athletes using asthma medicine. (As if that was the main worry of the earth)
