It is because the West desperately wanted to distract all people in the West from their own evil deeds. When one is systematically destroying his own country, he does not want people to notice and speak out. So Putin is the bad guy and Zelensky is the good guy. When there were rumblings from Russia about invading Ukraine, someone with wisdom should have stepped up to deal with it.
On 24th February [2022], the Russian military entered the territory of Ukraine under the auspices of a special military operation, aimed at helping the Ukrainians “remove the corrupt government and denazify the country” (Al-Jazeera, 2022). The Russian government presented their case as acting in the interests of the Ukrainian people, especially those living in the Donbass region – a part of the country embroiled in separatist movements and conflict since 2014.

Since ethnic Russians form the largest majority in the Donbas region, someone from the West could have suggested that a supervised referendum be held before Russia made any moves. If the majority wanted to join Russia, then that should have been the end of the matter. Russia could also have been put on notice that there should be no further incursions.
