We are talking about "sin being dealt with". There is no doubt that dealing with sin includes becoming released from sin, that is remission from sins, and that requires repenting and being baptized just as all the apostles said.
Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
We could not pay the price for our sins, so Jesus paid it for us, that was a propitiatory sacrifice. It means someone else paid your debt. As a result you are now free to leave debtors prison. But you need to stand up and walk out. Also, that payment was for all your sins, past tense. You go back out and sin again, you can again be thrown in jail. Yes, you can turn to the Lord and pray for forgiveness again. But you are still a slave to sin, you are not free yet. The goal is not that you remain a sinner, the goal is that you be free from sin and no longer a slave to sin.
This same word is translated as "mercy seat" in Hebrews. This is pleading for mercy. When you are asking God for mercy there is nothing that you can do but ask, it is all of Him, nothing of you. But that is not the goal.
In Ephesians Paul prayed that our eyes would be open to see. And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
That is not about mercy, that is about us being coworkers with God and the Holy Spirit working within us.
In chapter 3 he tells us the whole focus of his letter:
Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
He could never have become a minister by his own work, he had to first get the gift of grace, but that gift included the effectual working of His power within Paul through the Holy Spirit. If Paul had done nothing he could have received mercy, but not a ministry. His ministry built the church, his ministry cause the Body of Christ to grow into one new man and become a warrior to fight the spiritual warfare.
In chapter 4 he tells us every single member of the body must do the same
From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Every part of the body has a function to fulfill and that ministry is also the ministry to build up the body.
For example, what does it mean to repent and be baptized for the remissions of sin? Paul gives us the example in Ephesians.
Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
This person is not working for his salvation. No, he is working as a testimony of his salvation.

I can tell you what it does not mean, it does not mean that baptism is or gives spiritual salvation, grace >>> like is taught in some churches
