I don't have a link, but I just got an alert on my Fox News app that a plane carrying a Brazilian soccer team has crashed in Colombia. They are dispatching rescuers and are hoping to find survivors.

I'm not a soccer fan, but I think it's worth a mention and some prayers.

They were on there way to some finals game so there could have been some international players on board the plane...

Prayers for their families and friend....

I had a feeling it wasn't going to be the national team because they would probably fly first class on a major airline and not some small airline that uses a plane that went out of production 15 years ago (BAe 146, a.k.a. RJ85)..

They said the pilot reported an electrical problem but then they say they declared a fuel emergency. Judging by pics of the crash site it looks like there wasn't any fire so that would indicate no fuel on board when it crashed. Also they said the flight tested the limits of the distance that aircraft can fly.

Here in the US they are required to carry sufficient fuel to reach their destination an alternate and a 30 minute reserve. I wonder if they sacrificed fuel to get to the required payload?

Tragic accident that probably could have been avoided.

I'm sorry for mentioning this. I didn't realize this team wasn’t important enough for the Christian Chat news forum.

Yes that's the saddest part, that it could have been avoided. Its hard to believe that an airliner can still crash because it ran out of fuel in this day and age. I mean how could the pilots not know they were on empty. Ther last time I remember this happening was in the 1980's. It was a British Midland 737. Before that it happened in 1990 to an Air Avianca 707 (I think it was a 707).

A broken gauge? A faulty sensor, perhaps? Gross negligence? Tragic mistakes can easily lead to a loss of life, and mistakes are inherent to the human condition.

A broken gauge or faulty sensor wouldn't cause the plane to crash. They declared a fuel emergency. It has happened before in that 1990 Avianca crash where the pilots declared a fuel emergency but it was too late and the plane crashed killing everyone on board. The pilots misjudged how much longer they could fly. Airplane engines can become starved of fuel even before the needle hits empty because the plane's attitude (nose high or low) could cause the fuel to gather on one side of the tank. And once a jet engine shuts down it takes a long time to get it restarted.

Why on earth would you say that?

Of course it's important... did you not read the responses?

I thought it was important last night, but some people zeroed in on the fact that the team was not THE Brazilian soccer team, just A Brazilian soccer team. Although I did describe it as A Brazilian soccer team in my original post.

It was a fuel issue

I don't care what their status/stature was, it is a sad event, and prayers for their families.

Ok I just read some new info. Turns out they were supposed to stop along the way to refuel but they were delayed 50 minutes before they could takeoff so the pilots decided to skip the refueling and fly straight to their desitnation which was at the limit of the published range for that aircraft. They didn't have any reserve fuel for being in a holding pattern and the pilot's requests to land immediately due to low fuel were ignored.

Yikes. I heard about this earlier today, but I didn't know this had happened. I has assumed there was a mechanical issue. That's a really unfortunate lapse in judgement. Now, I'm starting to wonder if pilots and crews push fuel limits sometimes. I won't be so relaxed on my next flight :(

It wasn't 'some people'. It was one person. And perhaps that person was clarifying for others who may have wanted more details about who exactly it was? Not criticizing you. He also stated it was tragic. Online communication is easy to misinterpret.

Don't worry, "first world" airlines don't take chances like that. Skipping a refueling stop is beyond ridiculous. That was a small airline in a poor country. All major airlines require each flight plan to include alternate airports all along the way just in case they need one and the pilots are always aware of where the closest alternate is during a flight. Stuff like that just doesn't happen anymore in first world aviation. There was recently a British Airways flight that ran dangerously low before landing in Singapore and they warned the air traffic controller that they were ready to fly to their alternate if they didn't get clearance to land in time. They landed safely.
