Clint Eastwood makes a man's day and saves his life.

Feb 7, 2014, 5:18 PM

Clint Eastwood not only made one man's day, he apparently saved his life.

The 83-year-old actor-director performed the Heimlich maneuver on PGA Tour tournament director Steve John when he noticed John choking on some cheese at a party in Monterey, Calif., on Wednesday night, on the eve of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

Eastwood, chairman of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, which runs the popular PGA Tour event, immediately sprang into action when he saw that John was in trouble and performed the life-saving maneuver on the 202-pound tournament director.

"I am very lucky he was there," John said today in a statement to ABC News. "We were just talking after our volunteer party about the night, the great concert, and how much money we raised. At that point, I was eating a piece of cheese and I was talking, chewing, and drinking at the same time, which you can't do."

John said Eastwood then "noticed I was choking and he turned me around and performed the Heimlich Maneuver and the cheese just popped out."

Eastwood told the local paper, The Carmel Pine Cone, that it was his first time using the Heimlich maneuver.

"I didn't know that the Chairman of the Board needed to know how to do the Heimlich, but he did know," John said about Eastwood, who usually hands out the trophies at the event.

"He didn't make my day, he made my life," John added. "He was my angel and he was definitely at the right place at the right time."

Bulldog reunited with military owner after 2 years
image.jpg

By Laura McCallister, Multimedia Producer - email
FORT RILEY, KS (KCTV) -
We've seen time and time again owners and pets reunited thanks to a microchip and in some cases that could be after many years and extreme situations.

If there was ever a doubt about the honesty and loyalty of man's best friend, it's evident in the video of Maximus the bulldog being reunited with his owner.

The story began five years ago when Army Master Sgt. Paul Brightwell was about to be sent home from Iraq.

"I'd been wanting a bulldog for a long time and I did a lot of research," Brightwell said.

He bought one online and had the puppy waiting for his family when he returned.

The problem was that three years later his dog was stolen in Oklahoma.

"Someone backed up to our fence and knocked the privacy fence over and took him out of our yard," Brightwell said.

His town had been hit hard. Brightwell said a number of purebred dogs were stolen that week and he didn't think he'd ever see Maximus again.

"I had about 130 guys that I worked out looking for him. Pretty much in all of about three weeks we had signs posted up everywhere, every gas station, called the AKC (American Kennel Club), the local shelters and they put the alert out," he said.

But Maximus was gone.

Fast forward two years and Brightwell is working in Kansas at Fort Riley. He gets a call that his dog was found wandering the streets in Kansas City, identified by a microchip.

The long-awaited reunion was captured on a cell phone.

It was a heartfelt reunion that's been seen about 500,000 times on YouTube. While watching it, people can't help but smile, or pet their own dog.

"He sleeps with my son every night, so my son was glad to get him back," Brightwell said.

Still after two years Maximus knows where home is.

Brightwell's family still lives in Oklahoma and after he wraps up his final duty before retiring, he and Maximus will be moving back.

[h=3]Local High School Senior with Down Syndrome Wows Crowd[/h]

Bensalem, PA -Kevin Grow has been the manager of the Bensalem High School basketball team for four years.

He comes to practice every day but usually sits on the bench during games. The senior has down syndrome.
But all that changed last night

At the teams second to last game of the year against Abington High Kevin got the chance to play.
In the last 90 seconds he took the court by storm!

First Kevin made a foul shot then he stole the ball and made a layup!
The team had their final game today and Kevin started the game with another amazing lay up. But he was just getting warmed up! By the end of the game he made four 3 point shots in 1 minute and 30 seconds!

Boater Rescues Owl From Drowning

owl1.jpg

LAKE LANIER, Ga. -

It is believed that, under the dense fog, the poor little owl mistakenly thought that the water was land.

"Came out to the main face of the lake," said Brendan Mazur, who was boating in Lake Lanier. "And what came out to me was a little owl face."

Mazur said he knew the owl was in trouble when he said that it desperately was trying to get to the boat. When the boater offered a helping hand to the tired, stranded owl, the Great Horned Owl accepted in a heartwarming way.

Mazur then deployed the swim ladder, and the owl jumped right up. However, he started swimming toward land the moment he saw the fog clear, a move that got the most of him, because he quickly got exhausted. Mazur had to save the owl again and wrap it up in a blanket to let it sleep.

After resting for a few hours, the owl finally had enough energy to fly off. He offered a little parting gift by almost pooping on Mazur's face.

"I kind of blocked it with a towel," Mazur recalled.

Son saves mother after car traps her against garage

son1.jpg
BROOMFIELD, CO (KDVR/CNN) - A quick-thinking 9-year-old is being credited for saving his mother's life.

It was a chilly but nice Sunday afternoon when Dawn Howe and Cody, her youngest child, were in the
minivan
, ready to leave the garage to go to Cody's snowboard lessons.

"I reached for my sunglasses, and they were not there, so Cody and I kind of searched briefly around the
car
and couldn't see them," she said. "So I told Cody to just hang on a sec, I'm going run inside real quick and get my sunglasses."

In a bit of a hurry, Dawn Howe jumped out of the car to go inside but failed to put the car in park.

"I stepped out of the car. My foot was caught in like that, and I fell to the side like this, and the car dragged me through the garage," she said.

It pinned her against the garage door opening. She couldn't move and could barely breathe. That's when Cody went into action.

"I was out of my seat, jumping into the front seat of the car right here," he said. For his first time behind the wheel, Cody was a fast learner.

"She was saying to hit the brake, but I didn't know which one that is. So I pushed one of them, and then the car went forward, then I immediately pushed the other," Cody said. His quick action, no doubt, saved his mom from serious injury.

"I absolutely think he's a hero," Dawn Howe said. She is proud, and feels blessed for her son's quick action.

"When he was able to pull me forward, definitely he saved me," she said.

"I'm very, very happy that I helped my mom," Cody said.

[h=3]McDonalds Employee Turns 100 Years Old[/h] MC.jpg

MASSACHUSETTS - A McDonald's in Needham, Massachusetts gave a special celebration to one very special employee.
Morris Miller turned 100 years old on Saturday and a large celebration was held for his milestone birthday.

But it wasn't just about that! Miller was recognized for his quarter-century of employment at McDonalds!

He started when he was 75. When miller was 90 years old he could not do all the heavy lifting so his employer put miller to work with the customers… where he really shines.

"I did whatever they wanted me to do," says miller.

A regular customer
Orlando
say Miller is "funny and he makes us all laugh."

The store owner, Tim McCoy, knows Miller is a special employee.

"This is what keeps all the customers coming back, his smile and his determination to just keep on going," McCoy says.

"I'll keep coming as long as I can move", Miller responds.

Miller fancies himself as the "ambassador" at this McDonalds and the customers just love interacting with him and his infectious personality!

[h=1]Dog with 2 noses finally finds new home[/h] [h=2]Snuffles had been rejected by 4 owners over his unusual looks[/h]

No one wanted Snuffles because of his unusual looks.

But now the Belgian shepherd with two noses has found a loving new home.
The 5-month-old puppy wound up at an animal shelter in Glasgow, Scotland, about a month ago. In that time, he's had four different owners -- all of whom returned him because they worried he was freaking people out, according to the Record newspaper.

"Instead of his nostrils being fused together," veterinarian Angela McAllister said, "he's got some sort of split there."

A rare birth defect, Snuffles' snout doesn't cause him any pain or health problems.

Since his plight made headlines last week, the shelter has been inundated with emails and phone calls from people interested in adopting him, the Mirror reported.
He's now slated to move in with a family in the East Lothian area of Scotland sometime this week.

Victor 9th Grader Overcomes Rare Disease to Make Big Shot

Victor 9th grader Zach Houliares loves basketball. This year, he became team manager of Victor's freshman squad.

"He's awesome," "Greatest kid ever," "He's just Zach," are just some of the things his teammates say of him.

Zach was born visually impaired. He recently was diagnosed with Charcot Marie Tooth, a genetic disease in adolescents where the foot muscles degenerate. Simply walking is difficult and painful.

"It's hard walking and I want to walk farther but I can't because its slowing me down a little bit," says Zach.

Throughout the year, Zach talked about how great it would be to get in a game. Last Friday, without warning, head coach Jameson Ricigliano put Zach in for Victor's final minutes of their final game and gave him a chance at scoring the Blue Devils' final points.

"He's always worked hard and his relationships with the boys grew throughout the course of the season which made it all worth it for me," says Coach Ricigliano.

"I'm the one that passed it to him, so I dribbled down and told him to go to the block. As soon as he let it go, I knew it was going in," says Victor 9th grader Brandon Fink.

"It felt like heaven when I made that shot and I was getting a little nervous when it went in," recalls Zach.

Since Zach's big shot, the reaction on social media has been overwhelming.

"Kids from Fairport, Pittsford, all over the area have been tweeting trying to get Zach on Sportscenter and tagging LeBron James," says teammate Joey Pogoda.

And for the coach that has Zach on his hip during practice, the support is what makes it all worth it.

"This was all orchestrated by the boys im just the one that put it into motion, but these boys were the ones. and that just goes to show you how close they were and it means a lot to them."

What this Richmond Police officer did to a man in a wheelchair should make you smile

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Police officers don’t always catch the bad guys. They also help the good guys.
A photo of Richmond Police Officer Jordan Clark helping a man whose wheelchair battery died is earning the officer praise on social media.

“These are the stories that should be on the evening news!” Eric Vincent Williams posted on Facebook.
“Wow. Now that’s an officer doing a good job. He has a heart!” Sandra Pleasants added.

The photo was tweeted to Richmond Police on Saturday.

Here’s the story behind the photo, according to Richmond Police.

“Officer Clark responded and pushed the man for three blocks to 25th and Broad streets, where he had coordinated with GRTC to get the man picked up,” Richmond Police posted on Facebook. “He then helped the man get on the bus and then followed the bus to the man’s home near 21st and Q streets.”

Officer Clark’s job did not end there, according to police. When the bus arrived at the man’s home, police noted Officer Clark got out of his car and pushed the man another two blocks. When they arrived at the man’s home, police said Officer Clark helped the man safely get inside.

“What an incredibly kind thing for him to do,” police posted about Officer Clark’s action.
We agree!

‘Hi Mom God Bless’: Mystery message cheers hospital patients

(CNN) — It’s a medical mystery of a different kind. One that warms the hearts of those who most need it.

In the snow that piled on the parking deck rooftop of Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center, someone wrote in large, clean letters: “HI MOM GOD BLESS” (with a smiley face for the ‘O,” for good measure.)

No one knows who did it — or why.

But the message has brightened the bleak hours of many, according to Angela Washek, a nurse in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

It appeared early Sunday morning, after Washek saw a group of men running around on top of the parking garage.
“I didn’t know what they were doing,” Washek said.

She took a closer look when a patient’s daughter stood at the window of room 1155, and began to cry. Her mother had yet to wake up from surgery.

That’s when Washek realized it was more than a group of men playing around on top of a parking garage.

“My patient’s daughter wished she could have done something like that for her mother,” Washek said.

The incident was first reported by CNN affiliate WGN.

Although the recipient and the sender are both a mystery, the cheer spread beyond just one person. The message could be seen from about 70 to 80 hospital rooms, across four different floors covering the surgical, intensive care and oncology units.

Deb Song, a hospital spokeswoman, said the simple message inspired patients and doctors alike.

“We are trying to find out who put the message up there because it has made so many staff and patients smile,” she said.
The gesture is now covered by parked cars, but the sentiment of the message lingers.

“It reminds us,” Washek said, “to fight for their families, as well as our patients.”

Dying man saved by stranger who mistook him for a heavy breather | Mail Online

A dying man was saved after he phoned a stranger for help and she contacted the police, because she mistook him for a crank-calling heavy breather.
Accountant Ged Hall drifted in and out of consciousness on the floor of his home for 36 hours as he suffered a blood clot on his brain.
After eventually managing to crawl to the phone to try and call someone he knew for help, he accidentally hit the wrong numbers and telephoned Mary Readman, 56, who he had never met before.

Lifesaver: Ged Hall (left) accidentally phoned Mary Readman (right) as he suffered a blood clot on his brain

Mr Hall, 59, tried to ask for help but could only 'moan and groan', leaving Ms Readman thinking he was a prankster.
She put down the phone thinking it was a hoax but then became concerned and called him back.

After she heard more groaning, Ms Readman realised something was wrong and called the police, who traced the call and went to Mr Hall's house and kicked his door in.
Officers found him on the floor and he was rushed to intensive care where surgeons removed the blood clot and saved his life.
Borough councillor Mr Hall and Ms Readman, both from Hartlepool, have now met for first time since the incident last year.

Calling for help: Mrs Readman put down the phone thinking it was a hoax but then became concerned and called him back before calling 999

Ms Readman said: 'I don't have a clue how he phoned my telephone number, I wouldn't know Ged even if he walked past me in the street.

'It was so strange how it happened. There was this groaning down the phone and I just kept saying "hello" thinking it was a drunk or a prank.'
Mr Hall said: 'I owe her everything. I was unconscious. When I woke up, I was lying on the floor. I tried to get up and I couldn't. I couldn't shout or get to the door or anything.
'If it wasn't for what she did, and when she did it, I might not have pulled through. They say I will get completely better within two years - that is down to her.'
Mr Hall suffered his near-fatal brain clot at 7.30am on July 12 but did not manage to crawl to the phone until the next night.

[h=1]Katrina Survivor Helps Monroe Homeless[/h]
lowe.jpg

MONROE, Louisiana - A Monroe man survived Hurricane Katrina, only to face a life on the streets. But with the help of a local non-profit, he's back on his feet again and spreading his message of revival.

"I was studying to be a minister. I was there 6 months before Katrina came through. When Katrina came through, I was subjected to all this weather, nothing I’ve experienced before," said Hurricane Katrina Survivor Emmanuel Lowe.

It's the graphic images of Hurricane Katrina that haunt Emmanuel Lowe. He said he batted water up to his chest, to make his way to safety.

“Walking around in the water…contaminated water, people bumping up against you that are [sic] flowing with the current that have passed away,” said Lowe.

Lowe said he recalls dead bodies flowing up against him and others when the hurricane hit.

They were going with the current. So they were moving. When something bumped up against me and I looked down; It was a lady. She turned over and I looked at her dead in the face," he said.

The violent waves washed away his section of New Orleans and everything he had. Once the storm subsided, he was left with a lingering trauma and a life on the streets.

"When I came back, I still had this image in my head about what I went through. It was kind of hard for me to kind of get it right and get it better again. Because of what I went through," he said.

After seeking refuge in 2 other states, the Red Cross sent him here to Monroe. He says he lived in broken down, abandoned buildings in the Twin Cities.

Not only did he brave the harsh weather, he fought to survive in the midst of other homeless. Until one day, he received a helping hand from The Wellspring and his life on the streets came to an end.

“ I am so very thankful that we can be here to help; that we have some resources. We don't have a shelter, The Wellspring. We have a domestic violence shelter but not for general homelessness. There are not enough resources to go around. But we do the best we can,” said The Wellspring Director of Housing and Supportive Services Program, Lawana Brown.
Brown works everyday helping those in need.

"We get calls daily. We get people walking in daily. They are staying in the shelter or they don't have a place to stay.So they're just looking for a warm place," she said.
Last year the programs at The Wellspring served more than 600 people. But with limited resources, they were forced to turn many away.

"If there is not an availability, we turn over every rock to find something to help get them off the street," Brown said.
She says she wants to see more success stories like Lowe. With their help, he went from a life of poverty to moving into a home of his own and being a blessing to others.

He now serves as a newly appointed board member on The Wellsprings, as a voice for the homeless community.
"That's our job. That's what God put us here for, to help each other. That's what we are supposed to do," said Lowe.

The non-profit group stated they want to branch their outreach to help more people. But they need community support to make this happen.

WATCH: Grandparents transform snowdrift into luxurious igloo

HARMON, Ill. - An Illinois family got creative while enjoying the outdoors this winter.

In the small town of Harmon, Ill., a family built a luxurious igloo, complete with a freezer, fireplace and chimney, in their back yard.

It all started as a challenge between a grandfather and his grandchildren to see who could build the best igloo in a day.

Grandfather Wayne Larson spent eight hours turning a nearly six-foot snowdrift into the igloo, ABC News reported.

In a video posted to YouTube, the grandson said his grandparents won the build-off "this time."

The family said they are enjoying their newest creation while the cold weather lasts.

Prison officer drives to work Thursday morning on lawn mower

MORGANTON, N.C. —

A prison officer in Morganton was so dedicated to coming to work in the snow Thursday, he rode to work on a lawn mower.

The gatehouse staff told prison managers that Officer Thomas McCall arrived to work on a lawn mower.

Knowing the weather conditions and the importance of adequate staff to provide appropriate custody and security of the prison, McCall realized that the only way to get to work was to ride his mower from Valdese to Morganton.

It was a two-hour journey, through inclement weather, snow packed roads and a stop to re-fill the mower with fuel.

Thankfully he arrived safely and in extremely good spirits, according to officials.
