Boris Yelsin sold out his country, a strong man came in to fix the previous problems. Sometimes dictators arise not for only self serving purposes but because of the need to impose certain policies to fix past mistakes.

Putin is an authoritarian, when an attempt at democracy fails and all democracies fail eventually people make judgements that stability is more likely achieved via authoritarian rule.

Seems like almost the inversion of what is happening in the USA where a Republic is being taken apart bit by bit in order to install authoritarian/oligarchy rule... imho.

But then the USA is already an oligarchy maybe they feel they can pull back the curtain even more and people will be compliant with it.
Anybody's guess at this point.
