I agree with stopping criminals to protect myself and others. I would like to see the video of the officer on top of someone and shooting them. I won't say I disagree or agree with it. Let me give you a real life example of an officer trying to decide between taser and gun.
I know an officer who had a drugged up guy trying to break into someone's home. The guy didn't have a weapon so the officer tried to talk him down. There were some large rocks in the yard and the guy grabbed one and charged the officer. The officer paused for a brief second trying to decide if he should pull taser or gun. He pulled taser, taser hit the person but one hook missed. Guy hits officer with rock and knocks him down. Now the officer is fighting for his life because the guy is trying to strip him of his gun. Lucky for the officer others ended up showing up and got the guy off of him.
I would like to see your NZ officers come over here and work the streets of Chicago, New York etc.. Then after a month or two here they can tell us what they used the most, taser or gun.

There's quite a few reasons, but one thing is that the violence is not something going on throughout the country, it is limited to certain areas. I think I read somewhere that Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans, St. Louis and a couple of other cities were places most of the serious crime took place. If you are studying the US Census Bureau's site, you will find a lot of interesting data which most of those places have in common.
I was a cop for 12 years. In the recent shootings, the CD vendor and the guy in the car and a child in the back seat, neither was justified. Now, I wasn't there, but from what I could see on the various videos, the officer was too quick to go to his gun. I'm not sure what they are teaching cops these days in rookie school, but something is wrong. I don't know if they are letting their fears control their actions or what.
Having said that, war on the cops is not the answer. It's a tough job. Decisions are made in a split second and the public has days to decide what they should of done. Just like with jobs, they are good and bad eggs.
