My wife and I are fans of many athletes. I enjoy watching competitive runners and cyclists. For years we both refused to believe the evidence that athletes were using performance enhancing drugs. Then some got ill and some died. I watched the 2016 Boston Marathon last week and they mentioned that over 40 distance runners had tested positive for drug use and that the athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia would all be banned from this years Olympic games if their countries didn't start testing it's athletes in a serious manner.
Just like when Prince's handlers say he had the flu, athletes have agents and publicists who lie for them as well. They say the athlete was unaware of the drug in their system and it must have been their dietician who gave it to them. One female sprinter said she was taking medicine for narcolepsy that caused the positive test result. Her doctor denied she had narcolepsy and said he was not treating her with meds. Other athletes take a second drug to mask the performance enhancing drug. The punishment for taking a masking drug is only a six month suspension vs. a two year suspension if they get caught using a PED. To the athletes, it's a game of not getting caught.
