A few days ago I saw a news item about an Earth type planet discovered in orbit around a Star known as Proxima, which is part of the Centuri Star system. Its been named Proxima B This Star is our next door neighbour ''only'' four Light Years away. Russian Scientists are talking about sending a probe there. It will take about twenty years to reach it. I wonder if we have that long left.

Heh :) While I think we are running towards our own doom, I don't think we will have blasted ourselves to smithereens by twenty years. There's always been people running around hiding from judgement day and it hasn't happened yet.

I do wish that both Russia, the US and all other space exploring countries would put the same amount of money they use for space stuff into things to help their citizens though

It's mine. I claimed it. I'm gonna go live there. You can't visit. Go away.

I doubt we have 20 years left and i also doubt that Russia has a propulsion system that could do that distance in 20 years..

Be careful what you wish for. It could be populated by Revelation type beasts lol
...but it has no humans, and that is all I needed to know before claiming it. I'll take my chances with any native flora and fauna.

We're both in our 60's, so it's a toss up.

(I grew up on Star Trek, so, like the flying cars being the norm by now, I really expected us to be colonizing at least the moon. lol)

It does help their citizens. Without the space program, you wouldn't have a cell phone, the Internet wouldn't be around, a lot of inflammable materials wouldn't exist, and we'd still be driving cars that get 2 kilos per liter. (Did I get my metrics right there?)

Most of the innovations in the last few decades came directly because someone thought it was a bright idea to shoot a man outside our atmosphere and live to tell the tale.

Is it called Proxima because it's considered to be in the proximity - like 4 light years
is just a short bus ride. :p

short bus ride? Like a brief period of time short bus ride...or a bike-helmet wearing, window licking, short-bus ride?

I wonder if I have that long left as well, I will be 89 but I was thinking of humanity in general when I posted the comment.
I think people will be back on the Moon by then as well but I reckon Mars is a none starter. We had a Star Trek day on TV
recently to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the program. Viewers were invited to send in their favorite episode and twenty episodes of the first series were shown. We also have all of that series on the CBS Action channel.

Anyway

Live Long and Prosper!!

It's litres per 100 km. The lower the litres, the better gas mileage you are getting. My Honda CRV gets around 7 litres per 100 km, my husband's old truck, not so much!

I do agree that the science program gave us a lot.

Strangely, I am reading a book right now on colonizing Proxima B. The crew took 120 years to get there - they needed a generational space ship. They have just arrived, and are now putting down feelers. I can update the Sci Fi fans if you want.

You're welcome!

It was 50 years ago today, (September 8, 1966) and the best one was Trouble with Trebles, of course.

It will take a lot longer than twenty years to get there. We can't yet do 0.2c, which is 60,000 kilometers per second. Our fastest probe ever, Juno, now at Jupiter, only reached 74 km/sec.
