My father asked me today about the new federal law waiting to be signed; those that are on ssi and can work must work 20 hours a week. I told him I did not hear about it, but my dad was concerned because my son is autistic (not this new autistic spectrum crap but really autistic) and can it work. I told him do not worry about it, the key term is "can" and not people like my sister with back pain who can really work... She does work around the house, she can work... the rest of us do.... with our aches and pains... People that really need SSI vs. People that don't waNT TO WORK...?...

I have alot of back pain too, but I manage to clean my house. Sometimes it takes a couple of days, because I need to rest in between. There's a HUGE difference between cleaning a house where you can take as many breaks as you want, and being at a job where you have to sit or stand for 8 hours straight with hardly any breaks at all.

You get on SSI by being disabled. The profoundly disabled cannot work at all. If only partially disabled, they should already be encouraged to work some. I think you might be talking about other welfare programs. Ones with able bodied people drawing aid that could be put to work. I know there has been talk about that.

where we live, there are different 'levels' of SSI' to be able to receive the benefits,
the proof has to be in the pudding -
no holds barred, but REAL and as far as I know, 'dis-abilities' that are NOT fixable
or people who can do some kind of work, but not without powerful drugs that the medical profession
know that they would be unable to do, unless they were 'drugged to the max, because, when
someone reaches that stage, they 'feel NO PAIN', and thus their problems only get worse,
when those powerful, pain-killing drugs make them feel as though they can do anything...

we don't know anyone who has taken advantage of this benefit, really, most of them have died
because of their disabilities, but OH how they had to suffer in order to receive any 'relief' from
the government that they had spent almost a life-time contributing their hard earned salaries to...

Isn't this talking about people who are not of the age to Retire? Think it is. Those drawing their Retirement can not be forced to work.......... Many do, and the Government LIMITS how much they can work and still draw their Retirement.

No p_rehbein, SSI is strictly disability insurance. Your are thinking of SSA. SSA is for retired and disabled people that have paid in enough Social Security payments to qualify. SSI is like a Federal welfare system.

I got a ten dollar raise. Fortunately for the government, they raised how much they take out for Medicare by ten dollars too, so I don't have to complain about it. Congress got a $1667 raise. (Talking monthly raises.) They don't have Medicare taken out of their checks. They're not on Medicare.
