To me gambling is a game, just like it referred to in the Bible where they sat down to eat and then they rose up to play referring to the sinful, idolatrous worship of Moloch that took place at mount Sinai. The only reason anyone would have a "thrill" at a casino is because they worship money.
I think they just like to throw money away.

As a Christian it is not your money, you are a steward who will appear before the Lord and give account. I don't think "I like throwing money away" will help your case when you appear before the Lord.

Private business and for-profits also gamble but they call it investment or embezzling. Most often its embezzling into offshore accounts.

they dont give to charity often the person doing the embezzling is keeping it for themselves.

Governments are corrupt, and putting themselves in places where God should be, in our lives. We should be responsible ourselves, and it is up to us to not engage in things that are wrong. And there would be accountability for us.

God does not actually say government is needed in place of God. As God told Samuel, they have not rejected you, they have rejected me, when the people came to Samuel saying they wanted a ruler such as other nations had. We should really be over that thinking. There is not the right understanding of what is meant by the soldier not bearing a sword in vain. The appointment from God would be ideal governing, subject only to God, that is described, not our or previous governments of this world. Do you really want officers of our country bearing a sword they could use? But guns? Does the Bible mention guns? Of course not. For enforcing the law? Be careful supporting that. A law, any law, is what they will kill for, then.

I have a meme but will not show it through this, Facebook keeps it from being seen. It is because it shows with the actual cases it happens, that the police will kill you over untaxed cigarettes, over a fifty dollar bag of weed, for doing your laundry, if you're in your own home, for stopping a mass shooting, if you can't hear their orders. You can't have me believe you say this is what God wants in place. A police state is worldly.

Your concerns about state-sanctioned gambling and its impact on citizens are valid points to discuss. It's important to consider the ethical and social implications of such practices.

I'm curious if anyone considers buying any type of insurance to be gambling. I'm sure most wouldn't want to associate insurance as a form of gambling though even if it fits the definition: "take risky action in the hope of a desired result"

"Risky" is subjective. If someone makes $50,000 with a wife and child, spending $600-$1000 a month in premiums is an absolute "risky" wager to pay in case you ever need to use your insurance. Of course, the counter to that is that it's a gamble to NOT have insurance as you could end up going bankrupt over medical costs.

Hi @Smoke, that's an interesting perspective. While insurance does involve a financial risk, it's often seen as a responsible way to protect oneself and loved ones from unforeseen circumstances.

The rise in calls to gambling helplines is concerning, and it's clear that many people are struggling with gambling-related issues. It's important for governments and communities to address this problem and provide support for those affected.
I agree communities should address this; government not so much unless they are going to do away with it. This is unlikely, however, as government gets revenue by running lotteries.

I think it's important to remember the wisdom in those verses you mentioned. There's a reason why they've stood the test of time. The pursuit of quick wealth often leads to emptiness, while patience and diligence tend to yield lasting rewards. And you know, with the recent crypto crash making headlines, it's another reminder of the dangers of chasing easy money. I checked out that link you provided, www.crypto-casinos.com, and it's eye-opening to see how intertwined gambling can be with emerging technologies. It's a complex issue, but conversations like these are a step in the right direction.

I think its time to talk about gambling and how the state is now preying on its own citizens out of greed.

https://www.wcpo.com/news/state/state-ohio/calls-to-gambling-helpline-tripled-in-january

https://news.yahoo.com/tom-archdeacon-dayton-coachs-passionate-045900887.html

I am no prophet but it seems safe to predict this will only get worse.

Wealth gained hastily will dwindle,

but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. (Proverbs 13:11 ESV)

But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. (1 Tim 6:9-10 ESV)

Discuss.
Love this! I have to be honest and Lord forgive me but sometimes I do find myself thinking about what if I made more money or I need to make more commission on my checks. It is truly evil and will send people into destruction. Sometimes I constantly think about money because my husband wants me to make so much. It’s truly frustrating and causes so many arguments. I really wish he would become born again and realize how material things are the root of all evil.
