Jacob and his family already lived in Canaan before going to Egypt. They went there because there was a famine in Canaan and Joseph arranged for them to stay there.

Today, the Canaanites probably live in European ghettos.

That can be seen as a kind of death. :p

It appears that with the Canaanites, although they were sought out to be destroyed, some escaped, a few were shown mercy, some were never destroyed completely, and some were even captured and made to serve under forced labor. You can see this in Judges 1. More specifically verse 25 and down. It seems that their lineage was by no means completely wiped out.
