I am going to attempt to compile all my writings here on this Thread. As with others, I have not been a Christian all my life, but I have learned that all can identify with the various experiences I have had in my life's walk. I hope you enjoy my efforts, and that, if possible, you find encouragement, and/or solace in these writings.

God bless.........

ONCORE

Within the span of a heartbeat
Lies an infinity of undiscovered time.
To seek the meaning of life
Thru years of wisdom,
Is to waste the understanding of eternity
Concealed within a single moment.
Death is not the ultimate knowing,
Nor is life the everlasting pain.
For even as all events come to pass,
Each moment we have lived
We will, over and over, live again!

GOD BE WITH YOU SON

To walk the streets of an unknown town,
Depending so much on, then being let down.
To live in the dark, not knowing what is there,
To observe myself, and see only despair,

Friends of the night are my claim,
The shadows and corners hiding my shame.
Wishing to God I'd find a way out,
Yet, refusing His hand because of my doubt.

These are my sins, this is my pain,
Hiding my tears in the cool summer rain.
I have no tomorrow, I want no today,
My life consisting of things long passed away.

I live in a dream, a time long ago,
Time falls over me like a wintry night's snow.
Asleep though I am, not seeing what I do,
As I leave, I can hear Mother's words so true.

They enter my ears through the soft falling white:
"God be with you son, may He be with you tonight."

TIMES TWO

I'll walk on the water,
Walk on the water,
Walk on the water Lord
Just bid me come to You.
I'll step right out this boat Lord,
Step right out this boat Lord,
Step right out this boat
Just bid me come to You.
'cause the faith that I prayed for,
The faith that I prayed for,
The faith that I prayed for Lord
You gave me times two.

I'll climb up that mountain,
Climb up that mountain,
Climb up that mountain Lord
Just bid me come to You.
I'll not tarry long now,
Not tarry long now,
Not tarry long Lord
I'll come climbing up to You.
'cause the strength that I prayed for,
The strength that I prayed for,
The strength that I prayed for Lord
You gave me times two,

I'll live in the desert,
Live in the desert,
Live in the desert Lord
Just bid me come to You,
I'll not take food or water,
Not take food or water,
Not take food or water Lord
Just bid me come to You.
'cause the well that I drank from,
The well that I drank from,
The well that I drank from Lord
Was salvation times two.

And I'll walk on the water,
Climb up that mountain,
Live in the desert Lord
Just bid me come to You.

BEFORE DAWN, IF WE DARE

Quietly, in slumbering breath you lay,
warm in my arms, molded to me, as if of clay.
Gently, you sleep at ease and free,
And share these loving moments with me.

Dare I kiss your lips
Honey and dew?
Would the spell be broken
If I awakened you?

Could you ever be as beautiful
As you now are?
Will I ever find a way
To eclipse the light of a shining star?

Sleep, my love,
Dream your dreams in peace,
And never wonder if the day will come,
When your existence I'll release.

Even now,
As my mind captures the beauty of your love
So simple and true,
I find myself slowly descending
Into the endless depths of you.

So fear not, my love,
My leaving you at dawn,
This crime I'm sure
The gods would never condone.

Rather, trust in the love we share,
And think of tomorrow
Or the day after
If we dare.

LOST, MY BROTHER

To reach out with your hand
And be denied.
To strive for understanding
With no hope you cried.
With only the desire to help
Their backs slowly turn
Away from your crying pleas,
Blinded, they see not the concern.

The ways of the damned
Seem strange indeed,
Take care, judge them not,
Rather, rejoice for those who were freed.

DEAR MOM

To tell the story of one mans life, no other man can do.
Some are inspired by a Mother, others a Wife.
The influence of each always seems to show through.

Not too much, not too little, the demands are made,
And man must carry through.
Do this, do that, how much were you paid?
A letter came today, your being sued.

A mothers love can only be
A tear of joy for her son,
And of this tear, who can conceive
What greater works are done?

The love of a wife by comparison
Is measured with time.
Good times and bad, happy times and sad,
Letters of hope written in rhyme.

Mothers will always love their sons
And tighter draws the bind.

ODE TO A SHOPPING SPREE

Hey Mister, you seen a two-toned Chevy with the most of one taillight gone? Had a little country girl driving it, and a couple of rug rats tagging along. I'm serious fella, have you seen my car?

IN SOLEMN SILENCE, LISTENING LOW

I sit in solemn silence listening low
To unseen robins soar through heavens high.
Till fireflys flash as windblown candles glow,
Alas, 'tis true, thy love hath passed me by.

I sit in desperate darkness void of sight,
To see the dawn of dreams be born anew,
Till roosters crow as ore the East shines light.
Alas, 'tis true, thy love from roost hath flown.

I sit in furrowed pastures plowed for seed,
To touch the first birthed chutes whose fruit yield wine,
Till hope doth grow from love thy heart hath freed.
Alas, 'tis true, thy love lies barren from time.

Behold! True 'tis? thy hand falls across my heart?
For sleep was all which kept our love apart.

ALMOST HOME

Almost home, I'm almost home,
I can almost see that golden shore.
Almost home, I'm almost home,
I'll reign with Him forever more.

Almost home, I'm almost home,
I can almost hear that angel band.
Almost home, I'm almost home,
I can almost touch His nail scared hand.

Almost home, I'm almost home,
Lord, I can almost touch Your nail scared hand.

WINTERS WARMTH

When the winds blew cold
'ore that mountain called Brindlee,
The pines in their warm nestled thickets were the haven
From old mans winter for me.

I'd huddle among the carpet of needles
Safely kept from the snows awaiting.
Awe struck by the silence of the great Pines,
Could the forces of nature their existence be debating?

The Oaks and Elms 'ore the bluff from me
Stood naked, humble and gray.
Their red gold beauty of October's time
Late November's freezing rain did strip away.

The pond, where July was butterfly's 'n' bumblebees,
Going fishing, 'n' Mamaw baiting the hooks,
Lay frozen from December's cold.
Once an oasis of ease, now a wintry memory.

The pastures below my refuge of pines,
Springs playground for wildflowers 'n' arrowheads to find,
Did turn to muddy white snow 'n' curses
Watching Uncle Troy doing the chores,
He'd like some help if I'd be so kind.

Mamaw's house on the knoll
Stood so proud, so strong.
The wood smoke bubbling forth from the chimney
Spoke of the cookies 'n' pies she was baking,
It'd not be too long.

Sleepy quiet, in my haven of peace,
I'd wait, and watch, the chimney, and the back door too.
Soon, she'd step out on the porch...... "Paul, where are ye?"
Hot damn! Oops, I mean darn, the pies are through.

Home made ice cream 'n' blackberry cobbler
Dried apple pie, and maybe a peach or two!
The heck with these old pine trees,
"Mamaw, Mamaw, save some for me 'n' Gary, 'n' Haley too!

Sitting by the fireside crackling hot
With a smile and a smear of blackberry cobbler 'cross my face,
I'd look at the mother of the lady who bore me,
And wonder could there ever be a happier place?

The pine thicket of my youth
Stands yet, as the carpet of needles below grows deep,
But the blackberry cobblers 'n' pies are gone,

And sometimes when I'm alone, I remember, and smile, and weep.

WALLS

Mortar and stone
Towering in heighth,
Unyielding to wind and rain.
Secret passions
Trapped in time,
Lost eternal through memories of pain.

Three bricks and a bit
Did fall one day,
Come tomorrow, or the day after
How many will follow?
Who is to say?

To this I vow my strength in all,
To strive to make that damn wall fall.
With time and peace as my friends in arms,
I beg God for His golden charms,
To keep the tempest far from shore,
And the building of walls
Will be nevermore!

THAT DAY

No weeping, no weeping,
No weeping that day.
When my life is 'ore
And I wake nevermore,
Gather ye 'round,
And no weeping that day.

Sing praises, sing praises,
Sing praises that day.
My life's race is run,
I'm at home with the Son,
Gather ye 'round,

And sing praises that day.

Cry Holy, cry Holy,
Cry Holy that day.
I'll be waiting for you,
And Jesus is too,
Gather ye 'round
And cry Holy, cry Holy,

Cry Holy that day.

Up in New York the Catholics are burning candles, the Muslims are praying towards Mecca, and some old Jewish mother in Brooklyn is making Chicken Soup. They say this Town is the center of the Universe, and it's so nice, they just had to name it twice. So, how come down in Queens, there's a young kid with a rope around his neck, hanging from an Apartment stoop?

So, what do ya think we're doing wrong?
Is anyone tired of singing the same old song?
Is it possible we didn't have the answers after all?
You ever wonder if God is playing a joke on us all?

Out in L.A., the Liberals are demonstrating for equal rights, and protesting a march by the Klan. They call that place Tinsel Town, the place where dreams come true. So, how come over in Watts, the streets are on fire, and it's got so as you can't tell which side of the badge the good guys are on?

So, what do you think we're doing wrong?
Is anyone tired of singing the same old song?
Is it possible we didn't have the answers after all?
You ever wonder if someone forgot to invite God to the Ball?

So, what do you think we're doing wrong? Is anyone else besides me tired of hearing the same old song? We were all so sure our Generation had all the answers, so, who slipped up and forgot to invite God to the Ball?

So, what do ya think we're doing wrong?

IN THE SHADE OF FREEDOMS GROWTH

Then there was the woman who lost two sons to that war in a far away jungled land.

One to a bullet fired from a never seen enemy snipers gun which pierced his heart. He fell and died face down in bloodied sand. he never quite knew why he was there, and was puzzled even more by the actions of his brother, the one who didn't care.

Just at the moment he drew his last breath, with comrades returning fire at an invisible fear, he looked towards the setting sun, Westward, to the land he called home. He couldn't speak, and slowly, exhaling, his eyes closed upon one silent, lonely tear.

They told her he was a Hero, a proud son of Liberty! She got a folded flag, and a Telegram from some General she never knew, who said her son had died so that all men could be free. She thought about their words, the explanations were thin at the very least, but, finally, she understood and agreed. What he had done was good, and his death was not in vain. And, in his name, she went out back, and in the yard, planted a tree.

The other to a billy club wielded by an Officer of the Peace. A man blinded by fear, who was never able to understand how Americans could demonstrate, desecrate, and refuse to obey the orders of the Government, and have such disrespect for the Police. The club crushed the fragile bones just above and in front of his left ear. And, as he fell to the Officers feet, his eyes turned Southward to a far away land he called home. He thought of the brother who would kill innocent people in a far away jungled land, and he wondered why God had ever bothered to create such a man?

Just at the moment he drew his last breath, with comrades shouting "Peace" and "Stop the War", exhaling, he lowered his head into the pool of blood staining the steps of the Courthouse door. A loving comrade reached down and from his cheek, wiped away one silent lonely tear..

They told her he wasn't responsible for his actions, but that pot had destroyed his sense of right and wrong. They gave her his few possessions, bundled up in a pillow case, tie-dyed and closed with a long since discarded sandal's thong. She thought about their words, the explanations were thin at the very least, but, finally, she understood and disagreed. What he had done was good. He died so that all men could be free, and his death was not in vain. And, in his name, she went out back, and in the yard, planted a tree.

Then there was the little boy next door who loved the little girl with pigtails and a turned up nose. They met every summer evening in the shade of the twin trees that grew in the back yard of the rundown house where that old crazy lady lived. Their love was stronger than their fear of her finding them together there, so they embraced and dreamed of tomorrow.

And they never saw the sad old eyes behind the darkened window pane. And, just as she drew her last breath, she looked again toward the twin trees, wiped away one silent lonely tear. Slowly exhaling, she smiled and knew that, after all, her sons had not died in vain.

END NOTE

When it comes, that one is given to reflection, he might well state that his life was not one lived to the ultimate of plateaus. Nor might he feel that all his desires had been sated. He might well consider that life has left him wanting, as a tanker that has never been more than half full of fine wine.

Yet, everyone that draws breath, can surely reflect that when it comes to dying, they die as complete as anyone can. And, in death, they leave nothing undone.

OSTRICH SLEEP

I woke early to a darkened day,'
And wondered whence it came.
There were clouds stormy gathered,
Awaiting my presence to leak their rain.

I woke early to a silent sky,
And wondered where the birds had flown.
There were no crows, nor wrens, fluttering hither and yon,
Nor bees to kiss the flowers with their musical drone.

I woke early to a river dry,
And wondered where the water pooled.
There were no fish to catch, nor croaking frogs,
Nor even nervous minnows schooled.

I woke early to a barren land,
And realized the finale of mans fate.
My sleep, as others, lasted too long,
And I've found I woke too late.

SIMPLY A MAN

Just a piece of cloth, soft and warm to the touch,
Bright in color and attractive in taste.
Still, simply, a woven image of one man,
A man with a dream........who remembers?

Just a piece of land, dry and sun baked,
Little green at all. A fence, board and tools.
Still, simply, an earthly image of one man,
A man with a dream.......who remembers?

Just a piece of gold, bright and glittering,
Round in shape. Twinkling hopes of desire in each reflection.
Still, simply, a jeweled image of one man,
A man with a dream......who remembers?

Just a pine box, rectangular in shape,
Plain and free of ornaments.
Still, simply, a buried image of one man,
A man with a dream........who remembers?

CHAUVINISTIC CREATION
(or, better yet, Boy, am I in trouble)

God created man.
Then God created woman.
She was created
From mans rib.

When you add
"Wo" to "man"
You got 'em!

Seriously, I've often wondered
If there is a language somewhere
That translates "wo" to "of"
Then, there would be ofman
Which seems only right
After all, it was our rib.

Wouldn't you just love to see
the E.R.A. people
Fighting for "ofman" rights?

Somehow,
I think the balloon
Would quickly deflate.
