If You Carve Your Name In The Bark Of A Tree,
In A Few Dozen Years It May Cease To Be
If You Build A House Out Of Brick And Mortar,
After Four Generations, A Replacements In Order.
There Is No Permanents to things Of This World,
What Seems To Be Solid Begins To Unfurl,
No Matter How Strong A Foundation May Be,
The Wrecking Ball Has An Appointment With Thee.
So What Do We Do To Leave Something Behind,
That Proves That We Occupied This Space And Time.
Something That Stands Up To Heat And To Cold,
Not Bleached By the Sun Or Etched By The Mold,
Immune To Decay And Won’t Wither Away,
And Shine After Decades In A Saltwater Grave.
A Lasting Legacy Who’s Effects Can Be Followed,
From The Day That You Die,
To Earth’s Final Tomorrow.
You’ve Been Building This Legacy All Of Your Life
Midst The Hardship And Cussing And Toil And Strife.
It’s Not Held In Your Hand Or Placed On Display,
With A Festoon Of Banners Shining And Gay.
You Don’t Own What Is Permanent, You Give It Away,
And You Do That Most All Of Your Earthly Days.
Most People Are Wired To Do Right Everyday,
Help Changing The Path And Guiding The Way,
Restoring The Faith To Those Who Are Lost,
Nursing The Broken With A Nourishing Broth.
It’s Not What You Build, It Is What You Say,
That Soothes A Bruised Heart, And Keeps Anger At Bay.
Giving Friends And Strangers A full Measure Of Love,
Exactly The Same As You Receive From Above.
The Good That You Do Will Never Grow Old,
The Legacy Is From Your Shaping Of Souls.
