In the turmoil of a world aflame, under war's darkened sky,
A glimmer of hope arose, with eyes of conviction held high.
From the heart of Poland’s plight, defying the teeth of despair,
Maximilian, his greatness lent, a light from Heaven's air.

Against the storm, against the dark,
In steadfast faith, he let the cross be his mark.

In Auschwitz's shadows he shone the light,
Laying down life as Christ's life for him was laid.
In face of death's darkness keeping sight,
Providing a witness for the great price once paid.

Through the gates of pain and fear, where the shadows know your name,
He walked with the condemned, in a world consumed by flame.
Words of peace amid the cries, a calm amidst the storm,
In the darkest of the nights, his spirit did transform.

In the silence of the condemned, a single voice rang true,
"Take me," he cried, "for him, I'll bear the cross and see this through."

In Auschwitz's shadows he shone the light,
Laying down life as Christ's life for him was laid.
In face of death's darkness keeping sight,
Providing a witness for the great price once paid.

In the abode of martyrs, hear the angels sing,
Of a man who made his life and death a living offering.
Echoes of Christ's sacrifice, the courage never dies,
Maximilian’s legacy, darkness it forever defies.

Maximilian, saint over the abyss,
Taught us love is the path, and the greatest gift is this.
A heart unchained, his legacy, Christ's cross to uphold,
Saint Maximilian Kolbe, in whom God's love was bold.

On wings of glory, his memory soars,
Above the pain, where freedom roars.
A witness of the love that hearts from darkness liberates,
Maximilian, into the light, where eternity waits.

Note: This is not an endorsement of everything that Maximilian said, did and believed in his life. But I think his bold witness, carried out through action and not just words, is still a worthwhile subject of a poem/song like this.

This is beautiful. This is my favourite line:

In the abode of martyrs, hear the angels sing,
Of a man who made his life and death a living offering.

I didn't know about him.
