This might be slightly off the original topic, but...

Apart from the obvious reasons for increased porn usage--accessibility and cultural acceptance, I think part of the problem with pornography within the Church has to do with how the church deals with the sexuality of singles. Which is to say, the church pretty much says, "don't" and leaves it at that.

The "don't" was perhaps more effective 100 years ago when most people were married by the time they were like 22. Now, there is a much larger single population (to the tune of about 30% of the adult population). If churches aren't willing to engage in discipleship with singles regarding their sexuality, how do they propose that people learn how to handle it? Trial and error?....Well, yeah, pretty much.

I've talked to a lot of long-time singles about how their churches deal with some of these issues, and most churches don't. Some might luck into a great singles group, or a spiritual mentorship, but there are few churches that prioritize the internal lives of singles. Most singles are just expected to sort it out as best they can--which leads to a lot of isolation and shame around some of these issues.

Besides that, there are actual skills available to people regarding the building of a principled interior life. And a lot of valuable advice from singles who've "been there." I wish there was more access to this within the church.

I totally agree. Discipleship on addiction in general is pretty non existent in the church, which is truly sad. Then when someone is ready to be counseled they have the pay?? what? Maybe they don't teach sexual sin break free 101 in bible college. Ok all sarcasm aside. I think it's truly the same as any addiction and satan knows whos weak and preys on them. Roaring lion and such.

Right. Even seemingly "unremarkable" pornographic images (like one might associate with the early days of Playboy, for example), present women as objects. So you basically create a kind of system where a woman is a consumer product.

Problematic for women...yes. But it's also degrading for the people who use images of these women in a consumeristic way. It's impossible to dehumanize another person without also dehumanizing yourself.

We have both NA and AA groups that meet at our church. These are not church deals. We went right to the major organizations, and offered them the use of our building and our coffee. They jumped on it.

You want to know the truth? Something as serious and detrimentally damaging as porn very definitely requires that we all get angry about it. Without understanding that this is destroying your life, your future, your morals, and especially the fabric of your family if you are married... and your relationships if you aren't, you may never get serious enough to really DO something about this emotional cancer.

This is not a fun topic just to be bantered around on a forum. This takes serious psychological surgery.
I agree.

And I'll say this One....more.....time. Folks, this is a public forum that where we all come to find comfort or help in times of crisis, trial and hurt. Please try not to take anything in type to heart. You may not know who each one of us are.....but in the end we're all trying to point each other to Christ. That being said, as I also said the Mr. Dove last night, those of us who have subject near and dear to our hearts, it's truly hard to come up with what we're trying to say without it sounding brash or harsh, or even sometimes down right mean. That's not the case. Just because we see the big picture through experience, or just plain clarity through Christ doesn't mean anyone is puffing themselves up or being boastful.
If something pricks your heart, as this has happened to me, Log off, pray and ask God what that post really needs to say to you. If your here, God is also speaking and it may not be what you want to hear, but what you need to hear.
Flip side, I encourage you posters to be kind tenderhearted.........

This isn't about girl vs. boy. Please understand where each post is coming from before the swords fly. :)
We're all in this spiritual battle together. Joining forces will defeat the enemy faster.

I honestly don't know what I have to do. In all my years doing this therapy, Eyes of Honor is the absolute BEST answer (especially for Christians) that I have ever seen.

Hell, if you can't afford the lousy $10, PM me, and I will pay for the book for you. This is important!

I will add this isn't just a man's issue.

Really? I would think the Bible would be the best answer??

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. Ps 101:3

Why do you bother with church sermons? I would think that just the Bible would be the answer.

In this book, Jon uses the Bible.... Just like your preacher does. That is why God "gave some to be teachers." Because they have the ability to help us use and understand things we might miss without help.

Go try to learn to cook or drive a car by just reading the Bible. These teachers are out there for us to use.

Totally my point. Thank you. I wish there were more Christian people that were available to help. I've seen too much....well it's not my problem or outta sight outta mind. Are we supposed to point each other towards Christ even in the most difficult of circumstances.

Yes, I know. It's mostly a man's issue with the interest and involvement of women growing. However, most porn is oriented toward men. Even porn depicting exclusively men is oriented toward homosexual men. Certainly, there are men within the porn industry. Most of the porn industry is controlled by men (production and directing, site ownership, etc.)

However, you'll note that while I mentioned "women" being objectified (because zoii addressed the degredation of women), I was careful to NOT presume that the consumers were men. I said, "it's also degrading FOR THE PEOPLE who use images of these women..."

I see where you're coming from, but I'll disagree. I think men have gotten a bad rap on being the top dog with this addiction. Maybe because they are affected by what they see more than woman. But I think the sin has equal participates. It's just perceived differently. Woman are turned on through attention and the mind, more than visual stimulation. I guess that's why the porn industry is balanced. Addicted men watch, addicted women are the show and the other side of the screen.

You don't tell a porn addict (or anyone) to watch porn and make assumptions about the people in the porn. Or think of how they feel? That's exactly what that person is doing. Jesus says if a man is to look unto a woman with lust he has sinned in his heart. By the way I haven't watched porn in a week
