I think I would be interested in participating.

And to the naysayers...knock it off. Seriously. The Bible discussion forum is always open.

have always been interested in crafts and needlework, but have NEVER been able to learn from books and manuals. I can read a technique until I'm blue in the face but don't quite "get it" until I see the actual process demonstrated live or on video. It doesn't negate the validity or value of the written instructions at all, but rather, serves as an aid to my own comprehension, which is how I view trustworthy Christian books and accounts of how people live out their lives as Christians.
That reminds me of a bible verse:

"3 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?" 1 Corinthians 3:1-3

"Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,
2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 2:1-5

But I am not saying that, because of this that is a bad thing, no. People are all at different walks with God. And this is for those who had previously kind of made like she said- "snide remarks".

"
29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." Ephesians 9:24

It is good to have these books, and to the person who said about the "mormon" one.
They take and add away and yes, many Christian books DO have self-help type things but some are for building of faith and you should look it that way rather than "self-help".

"
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:" Revelation 22:18

"
Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish oughtfrom it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you." Deuteronomy 4:2

And if the book does turn out to be one of those self-help books, then hopefully they will stop reading it. Now I am also not saying to DECEIVE themselves because the bible says:

"Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise." 1 Corinthians 3:18

"Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!" Isaiah 5:21

I am saying to be cautious and TO NOT deceive themselves, but be careful what you read.

Also here is a quote:

"22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.
25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed." James 1:22-25

I say this out of love, no pressure intended.

I meant to say some are for NOT self-help but FOR building of faith, but by saying that, neither am I excusing self-help ones.

i would assert that any book that is based upon, references, directs us to, and encourages us to study the bible, along with deepening our relationship with God would be "studying the bible".

the proposed text can be found here.
Why not study an important doctrine of the Christian faith instead of a self help type book?

Of course, we SHOULD study the bible by reading and meditating on it day and night, observing closely to make sure that we follow God's word. If anyone feels the need for and wants to study the bible outside of their personal time with God, then one should do so. And at the same time, if one puts out an effort voluntarily to start something meaningful and worthy like studying Christian book on the subject that is very relevant to this forum full of single people, i.e. marriage, by laying down a well-crafted proposal to find out if anyone would be interested in doing so in a non-pressuring manner, providing links to all the available sources so you can click and find out, then I think that effort should be supported and commended.

Today's sermon was about marriage as my church's been doing a series on marriage for like past 6 weeks, inviting guest speakers who are expert on the subject. Today we had Phil & Holly Wagner from Oasis Church who did a sermon on 'How To Affair-Proof Your Marriage,' which was also based on their book, "Love Works" and "Marriage Makeover." I think reading Christian books (and studying as a group, discussing and sharing thoughts) is another great way to study bible outside of one's own personal studying because it's basically a study on the bible with commentaries and insights. There are plenty Christian couples who want a marriage that is pleasing in God's eyes and often times they do know relevant scriptures on it. However, there are always failing marriages within Christian community and why discourage any effort to seek another source of help that is based on the bible from fellow Christians?

My siganture, "He loves me!" by Wayne Jacobsen, a Christian book, literally changed my understanding of who I am as God's child and how much He loves me in such a fundamental way by reading and studying (I literally studied this book) what the author has to say on the subject, despite of all the studying the bible on my own and as a group.

Okay, haha, perhaps this was unnecessary for I just wanted to say I am interested.

I've been seeing a few people say this and this word is completely new to me so I looked it up and just, I'm just letting you know what it means in BIBLICAL TERMS (DUN DUN DUN):

"Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain." Exodus 20:7

Also I say I would be interested too.
LORD = God, not Jesus. LORD God, not Lord Jesus.

But I see you're a Jesus Juker too.

I am interested. I would also like to read "The Purpose-drive Life" by Rick Warren.

I love to read but I never find the time. I am sure that joining a group will push me to spend some time reading.

Tintin and I recently read a Christian book on relationships at the same time. We both gave it a lousy score, but for the parts that were thought provoking, we did come together and discuss it. We've had some deep conversations because of it. It was actually really fun, and I think things like this really draw people together. I'd gladly join. But if Tintin does, be prepared for a full length review on the book!

I am open-ish. But can be quite a book snob about some Christian books out there after being in university. I don't know how much I would actually get out of it in relation to what I have studied from theologians. I foresee myself just getting aggravated. So maybe it will depend on the book. C.S Lewis's apologetics would be a good fit for this thread tho.

....particularly The Great Divorce (not about marriage), The Problem of Pain, The Screwtape Letters, Mere Christianity. All good works that can spur conversation and thought. That's my input.

Sure. Two conditions though.
1. You have to read the book to me.
2. I can date book club members.

good input, arwen. i too, have developed a deep fondness for the many of whom i refer to a "christian author royalty".

i was hoping that to start off, we could find a book that would appeal to the widest range of reader interest, preference/ability, and relevancy. but, i'm definitely game for going off your list in the future. perhaps the next round you can take the lead and we could go for a lewis classic?

anyway, i hope you decide to join us, because i think you'll find it well worth your time. : )

to others who have asked questions: more info to follow shortly.
