I'm also curious to see if anyone has done this and the dad said no, and what happened after that?

Since you didn't specify why I'm goign to assume you mean dating in which case, no I don't ask. I mean lets be serious am I supposed to someone found out his number wherever he lives and call him up? Thats not a little awkward. I guess if you live in a small town and the girls you like still live at home, well then knock yourself out.

What he said.

I'm old, my father is old. He would laugh if someone asked him if they could date me. I didn't ask his permission at 16 either, so uhmm....yeah.

No I wouldn't. But I think it would be profitable for her to introduce you to him at some stage and assuage any concerns that you're a bad egg.

I'd certainly want to seek his blessing if I were going to propose to her though.

Unless the young lady is living at home and there's some particular cultural thing in her family, I wouldn't think it necessary. I'm kinda thinking that anyone who needs her father's permission to date probably shouldn't be dating anyone over 21, but that's just me....

If the father was adamantly opposed to me and her courting, then I'd tread cautiously. I wouldn't necessarily write it off completely, but I'm not about to ruin her relationship with her father. After all, I'm just some bloke. If he doesn't think I'm good enough for her, then, well, he's probably right. Afterall, he knows her better than I and probably loves her more than I can imagine.

My first boyfriend asked my dads permission twice. Of course, he didn't tell him we'd already been dating 2 months lol. When my dad didn't answer for another month, he asked again. My dad gave his consent and we dated for almost a year.

Depends.

I live with my parents, and my dad doesn't care. My mom trusts my judgement. My dad said that a guy doesn't have to ask him permission to marry me, even. I would like the guy to, but I won't make a big deal of it. If he does it, cool. If not, well... he better have gone through my mother and pastor, cuz THEY will care (and love being a part of secrets and surprises).

I make the guy go through my pastor in order to date me. His permission and counsel means the most to me. Anyone that's known me long enough knows that. ;)

I think there are some great threads for you to troll under "recipes". "A lot of people don't have hands to pour syrup with". Or "some people don't have ovens to bake with".

;)

I was being totally serious. So im not exactly sure whats with this answer.

I would ask the father mainly cause of tradition. Also it makes some dads feel as if they still have control of "daddies girl".

Same here. It also shows him that you are mature and that you will respect his daughter and the rules on dating. But I am also very young and most girls I'd court are still in highschool living at home. So thats another reason. I think if you're going to date while in highschool then it's a good idea. But if they don't live at home or are more independant then I don't see the point.

USNCorpsman and Warrior, I would agree that, for the age group of ladies you would most likely be dating, it could be important, especially if they are still living under their father's roof. I said "no" to Stratocaster under the presumption that ladies his age are probably on their own already....maybe not..

Excuse me, but, I haven't had a dad since I was 12 years old. So, Nod is right, a lot of us have no Dad's for guys to ask, when we were younger.

Of course now, I think I'm old enough not have someone ask my dad if they could date me.
