You just dump your change into the opening, it counts it, and then either applies it to a gift card of your choosing or gives you a slip of paper to take to the cashier to get cash, which is less the processing fee. A lot of people put there change from their pockets into a jar every night as they empty their pants. Some use piggy banks, some even use a 5-gallon water bottle.
Its actually a simple concept. The coins are pushed over various sized openings, starting with the smallest, the dime. The dimes will fall into that tube. The other coins are too big for it so they roll over the opening. Next is the penny, then nickel, and finally the quarter.
