I think it comes down to considering her personality and being creative. I've only dated one person before, and I ended it after a month because there just wasn't any romantic attraction there, though we are still friends.
The first time he took me out, it was to the Olive Garden. I like eating there, so it was a nice choice, but it was very crowded and noisy. And considering that we're both already pretty quiet people and he's not extremely talkative (really, neither am I), not a whole lot of talking took place and it would have been difficult as well. So, restaurants are always a nice option, but consider how crowded your choice might be. Another date, he took me to hear the Florida Orchestra, which didn't give much opportunity to talk during, but dinner beforehand, intermission, and the ride there and back gave us time to talk. So a movie is not out of the question either, so long as it's something that you'd both be interested in seeing. One other time we went out, he took me to a sunflower maze. It was looking pretty sad, as storms just a day or two before knocked many of the flowers down - it also was extremely easy to make it through, and not very long. But it was creative, and it was still fun. And we went to lunch afterward.
But, like I said, you can get creative. You could plan a picnic, you could go bowling. If she's athletic and adventurous, you could plan something outdoors. You could even go paintballing if she's up to it. But again, you have to think about what she likes, and plan accordingly. I think dinner and a movie is a fine option, and a classic. Most people are quite happy to do just that. You might also plan a dinner at home (if you can't cook, you can always pick it up from a restaurant, lol, but she'll be impressed if you attempt to cook on your own), and include a dessert, and then you could rent a movie or pick one off of the shelf. That will also give you time to talk and spend time together, you wouldn't have to worry about the movie being too much of an interference or missing any of it, as you could just watch it over.
Hopefully you've gotten some pretty good ideas from this thread.
