I had pets since i was a child, i have had dogs and cats and i love them.
Now i cant have them because i dont have the time to take care of them but i was thinking how important was to me in an emotional way to grow up when i was a child.

Do you think is important to have a pet to develop emotional parts of us when we are growing?

Did you have a pet when you were a child?

I think having a pet when one is growing up, or even at any age. Can be a great thing to experience. You learn to be more responsible, and besides you can tell your pet anything, and they won't talk back to you about it. (haha, that's good on some days).

I had a spaniel most of my life. Good old dog. She passed away though, about a month and half ago. But she lasted to be 14.9 years of age. Which is pretty outstanding if you ask me. ^_^. I would probably get another dog one day.

Pets help us grow and live, even excercise , I love, love, love my girl, talking 'bout my girl, my girl :D
We go in the field and play and it is good to race her, I always lose tho :( But, yes, she is 65 pounds and can hit 30-35mph. ) Very, very fast, but not only fun, but she's my protector, barks at people if she don't know them . Most she can quickly get a vibe, good ones she don't bark at and, , baddies, they know to steer clear and her teeth make that clear.
Pets teach us to reward too, we can give them treats for being good, not chewing up the furniture while we are away . And they are always there for you, never mad at you and always for you, long as you feed them . Pid can get feisty if I forget to feed her or don't feed her enough. More reasons good to have a pet, like understanding having kids, but different .

This is so much more funny if you replace pet/pets with girlfriend/girlfriends. :p

I love animals. We had dogs when I was growing up. I had a dog when I was out on my own, and another time I had cats and another time I had iguanas. Right now I live in a condo owend by my sister and she said no pets. Which is fine with me cause if I had one and it got sick I could not offord to take it to the vet.Plus I donot have a lifestyle to take care of a pet. I like to spend the night some times at different relitives houses. So I wouldnt be home to take care of any critters. However, I would really like to have a pet.I live alone and it would be nice to have some company. Or a dog to take for a walk
My 26 year old son lives with my mom and he has a dog. I love him so much. I get my doggy fix when I go to my moms. He is so cute and has a funny face.

Chumley is a gorgeous dog!

I agree with what people have written that having a pet is a great responsibility when you're growing up. It's good for kids to show care and responsibility to an animal that is dependant on them. They have to tend to it's needs before their own. I've been fortunate to always live on a farm - great when you love animals! And have always had dogs and cats, and a vast amount of 'cute' small animals! After a long day at work, I know I've still got to walk the dog and sort out the pony before I sort myself out.
And it's not a one way street either. The love and loyalty you get back from your pet is wonderful and coming home to them and spending time with them can make the not so good days so much better!

CatWoman that dog looks HUGE! but it's cute, looks like a gentleman :)

I have 3 dogs, ages 12 and 11. The oldest one has been with me since I was 7 years old and the others came along a year after, so they are part of my family :). Since I've always had pets around me, even when I didn't have a pet of my own my grandparents always had one(wether it was a cat, a dog, or chickens) ... I can't imagine how it is not to have one. I understand that some people simply don't like pets or that they are not used to them, but for me nope..that's not normal, I LIKE having a pet, I got used to give affection to them.

Pets have always been important to me. The affection my pets have given me has helped me through the loss of my husband and my mom. They listen to stuff you can't tell anyone else without judging you. :)

Mine have also helped me stay in shape because when I forget or don't feel like going running with them, they've INSISTED. :)

I lost my husky recently, but I still have my wheaten. It won't be long before my son is out on his own and I will probably need to get another dog...

As you can tell by my avatar...I don't like pets. Can't stand them! JK of course! I love animals of any kind. I respect them too. I don't think (as many do) that they are "dumb animals". They do things we may think of as dumb, (or gross even..haha) but they are not dumb.

To answer your questions, I lived on a farm growing up....we had farm animals and pets both. They do encourage compassion, gentleness, and loveing care. They also can be a good source of responsibily training. They depend on us, and love us unconditionally.

I went all of 3 months living on my own (with my new hubby) before getting a kitten! Since then we have always had pets in the house, and most probably always will. Right now we have three cats, a dog (the papillon on my avatar) and a bunny.

Losing a pet is awful. We lost the first cat from feline leukemia. After that it was about 4 months and we got another kitten, who lived to be 17 years old. It was very sad losing her, my daughters were only 3 and 41/2 years old when she came into our lives. So far, thankfully, the rest are all still here with us! Loving us and being loved!

I never had a pet when I was little though I would've liked to have had one. However, I'm not a pet person <now>. I do love pets... when they belong to others :) But yes, I believe pets are important for children's emotional growth for sure. That's partly why I plan to get some-- more than one since it's also important for a pet to have a live-in pet friend :)-- when I have kids.

I will say that for me, I have always wanted a pet in my home. Different people vary on pet views, I know, but they bring a source of comfort and companionship for me. I even have a stuffed pink panther that rides with me everywhere in my van so that I don't have to feel alone - crazy, I know, but what can I say? Those of you that know me ... Know me! LOL. We had a dog and two cats at one time, but my father was emotionally and verbally abusive and he never really liked animals so he had us get rid of them. I was heartbroken. When my mother, stepfather, and I moved into a duplex where we could have pets, we got our Papillion, Rusty. We, later, acquired two cats as well, Midnight and Mischief. My father left my mother in 2000 to move in with her best friend and my godmother, and they are now married - what's funny is, my father's distaste for animals was soon turned around, because now they not only have my dog that he had to take with him (they got me a dog in 2000 and he had to take Buddy because my mother told him he was not giving him to me just to get rid of him), but now they have THREE dogs. My stepmother has her two dogs and then mine. Tooooo funny!
