State Road 16 west is a hard drive. Curvy and long the two lanes make slowpokes impossible to pass and just when the road straightens a bit, there's a line of logging trucks coming in the other direction. To be honest though, I had never really decided whether it was the road or the destination town of Carrollton that slowed my time and hardened my disposition. I didn't like Carrollton and I didn't like SR 16, and it was right there west of Griffin that my tire found a 16 penny nail appropriately enough and flattened it quick and sure.

When I thudded to a stop the roadside Johnson grass came up to my knees and the ground was soft, but there was a little white house down about a hundred yards with cut grass, so I rolled down to the property edge. The house was up close to the road. It looked like maybe the highway had encroached on the house right of way at some time or other and my guess was the owner's got tired of the road noise.

I started loosening tire lugs on my knees with that tiny little wrench they give you when a shadow suddenly blocked the sun in back of me. I looked behind and a man at least 6'5" and 250 plus stood over me thankfully with a grin on his face. His triangle eyes said he didn't take no crap from anybody, but would give you the shirt off his back if you asked. He had a 4 way lug wrench in his right hand and a street cone in his left and asked if I needed help. Then he yells "Pipp..... Pipper!" "Yeah Pa" answered a girl's voice. "Bring this man somethin' to drink".

And that's how I met Pipp with a lemonade and a very enjoyable hour with a wonderful family. "Pa" was mechanic and turns out that between him and Pipp, I couldn't have found a better place to flatten a tire or collect a good memory.

I still ended up in Carrollton though.

There once was a girl named Pipp,
Who decided to take a long trip.
She met another girl through her cel,
You guessed right - her name was Mel!
Off they both went to the local lake,
Where Pipp brought along a cake!
It was unicorn themed with lots of sprinkles,
So beautiful and rare like Pipp’s dimples!
And that’s the end of a short story,
Now let’s give it up for Jesus and give Him all the Glory!

Haha yes, I knew someone/ones was going to do it. I wish pipp you had said let's write fiction stories with the theme being meeting each other. Are fiction story tellers liars, if they tell the readers it is fiction?
You know though. Jesus also knows our heart. He knew what Pipp meant and that it was suppose to be a store (fictional) and so did the people that I have seen writing these fine stories for others to enjoy, as we all knew it was fictional fun...🙂

I stood at my table calmly observing the bustle of anticipatory activity as the judges entered the crowded pavilion, which was resplendently decorated in festive manner for this extravagant occasion. Colorful balloons of every hue hung mid air twenty feet above us; twenty feet above the helium-filled latex, rubber, and polychloroprene shapes, floods of bright summer sun filtered through the highly vaulted sky lights, unimpeded but for the momentary passing shadows of birds in flight as they cast their liquidly flowing silhouettes on gently billowing streamers and pastel walls. A murmur of muted eager anticipation stirred the air as the judges wended their way through the phalanx of cake-bearing stands and throng of attendees to deliver the final verdict at the front of the auditorium.

It had come down to just twelve of the original two thousand, four hundred and seventy two contestants, one from each of twelve categories, and all were present, many with family, friends, and loved ones to learn the outcome with the announcement of the winner. Weeks of diligent work had gone into preparing for this moment, and I marveled at how composed few of my fellow contestants still were. This was, after all, the be all and end all of bake-offs. The top prize was a million dollars, with the winning recipe to be feted and immortalized in numerous cook books in the coming years. Each of the eleven remaining contestants would drive away with a car and one hundred thousand dollars.

I noticed one woman who seemed completely unflustered by the anxious suspense that permeated the room as we awaited the final verdict's decision. Though we had not officially met due to our having entered in different divisions, I had come to know that she was a veteran competitor, and past winner of numerous bake-offs. Surrounded by many who had been long time supporters and grateful recipients of her love of baking, she unperturbedly returned my steady gaze. She was confident she would win. After all, she had never lost a competition before. We nodded good naturedly at each other as the judges took their places at the head of the room to face the congregation and begin their recounting of the week's events and drawl their congratulatory speeches.

Finally! At long last the judges prepared to announce the top winner. Weeks later her and I would laugh together at the resounding gasp that collectively rang through the incredulous crowd with the passing of two envelopes signalling an unprecedented tie. As we walked to the podium together, we linked arms and made our initial greetings. "Hi, I'm Pipp!" And, "Hello, nice to meet you, my name is Magenta."

I will never forget that memorable day :):D
Nice mastery of (not just baking obviously too) of language though out the story.

I do have to say that I am surprised that the balloons were multi colored and not just, dare I say it... Magenta😎 . Well done!

There we were at the same place at the same time in front of a grocery store standing over a box of the most adorable kittens wondering which one we would take home. Pipp had stopped by for some baking supplies and I was in a rush to grab some food for dinner.

As we both reached down into the box our hands reached for the same white kitten with blue eyes and then we looked at each other and smiled.

As they always say a good story leaves them wanting more.....

I read this and my first thought was: Kittens at the grocery store? What meals can you make out of kitten? And who would eat that?

It's how I got rid of two litters of kittens sitting in front of a grocery store with kittens in a box and an offer of free box of kitten food with kitten..... A lot of lonely people buy food and love kitties for me it was a win.
