When I go to places where there are lots of people, I say hi to the ones I know, then, when they introduce me to their friends that I don't know I keep in mind unconciously that they are people just like me, imperfect. This is like the "imagine they are all naked" advice, but different . If you put people in a pedestal or in an overly low perspective, you will be intimidaded or in a defensive attitude.
What works for me when meeting someone is smiling, ask a question (nothing very deep at first) and then from that first question you can start a conversation, then just let it flooooow.
