2 samuel 8 I gave you your master’s house and your master’s wives into your keeping, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more!
Yes, the wives would need to be cared for. It would have been wrong to throw them out in the streets. This doesn't show me that God approves of polygamy though. It simply shows that he is thinking about the welfare of the wives.

Very well put and according to their laws either Sauls brothers were to take them in, at least the ones that did not bear a male child to Saul or their families took them back in. However in this case God gave the wives to David.

Hello Folks!
Does anyone know if polygamy (practise of having more than one wife) is against christianity, Can you quote the relevant scriptures or verses about Polygamy in the Holy book!

You are welcome to express your view even without the relevant bible scriptures!
It does not support polygamy, though there are polygamists in it, we also see the consequences of polygamy that God allows. God allows things to fulfill His will - ie 12 sons of Jacob from 4 different women I believe, 2 from his favorite wife whom the first - Joseph was despised

Ishmael became a father of Islam - and thus slavery from religion - yada yada those pictures lol

The bible isn't a white washed book of perfection in people - but perfection in GOD

I understand how people can say they don't like it or agree with it.....I don't see how it could be called a sin though.....as another guy pointed out.....God has directly given people multiple wives. We know he's never wrong.

He gave laws to that we no longer follow.. An eye for an eye for one. He wanted to replenish the earth. Therefore he allowed men more than one wife.. earth is hereby replenished. Husband of one wife, let each man have his own wife etc is now the situation,

I agree that monogamous marriage, one husband, one wife is absolutely the most biblical way to live for Christians who want a relationship......but polygyny is also biblical and of all the sins listed in the bible (And there is a very long list of do's and don'ts), that isn't listed as one. I can't imagine who would want more than one wife, I'm sure one is more than enough trouble....lol, but I couldn't accuse anyone of sin if they wanted more than one. There's no biblical reason I can see to say it's wrong.

Given the context, an eye for an eye was a fair deal in its day.

"He ran over my son with his chariot? Burn him, his family and give me his wife!"

(that'll teach him a lesson.)

God made laws around the sin of man. Just like He gave an eye for an eye law. God doesn't believe in us seeking revenge but had to give that law to draw a line. The polygamy stuff was to draw a line. People took multiple wives to procreate in multitudes creating bloodlines. Abraham and Sarah were married but he slept with Sarah's servant he didn't marry her. So God gave laws for this lifestyle. Not all customs were in Gods perfect will. I doubt if that were His perfect will, that in the NT it would have said that an elder must be husband of one wife. The distinction is made for a reason,

Liamson exactly. He had to draw lines. It started because of the rape of the sister in one of the tribes. The sisters tribe castrated and murdered all of the members of the tribe.. so God drew a line.

TBH
God's Adam and Eve were his perfect will way.. it wasn't until after the fall that multiple wives started..Cain who was cursed had a descendant who was the first polygamist when he took two wives.
Then after the flood, why didn't God provide the men with multiple wives if that were how He wanted it/
Noah had Mrs Noah and his boys had one wife a piece..

Many of you say that God gave David extra wives..
well God also told His men to kill whole cities of people and the babies too..
but we don't do that today as murder is a sin..
You also must look at the lives of those who had multiple wives and/or concubines (Abraham had a concubine)
there were bad consequences..
And Solomon really had idols that used to be wives.. because that's what he turned them into in his heart..

When Paul gives specifications for leaders and elders in the church it's always someone who has one wife.
Why is that if that is God's way?

And if that is not enough?
obey the laws of the land should be good enough. :)

God created marriage. He said it was good!
Marriage was between one man and one woman. If God wanted the man to unite with multiple women, he could have easily created Eve, Suzie, Betha, and Cleo..but he didn't. His model was the ideal marriage. When"kings" who were idolators were on the earth, they took many wives as a sign of their wealth and strength. We are not to follow the ways of the idolators.
