X is slightly jealous of Y, because Y is "gorgeous" and is flocked by men. X feels slightly insecure about her looks, I'm going to assume. And X won't take any advice nor accept any encouragement because...?

Ladies, your turn.

X probably won't take that sort of encouragement from a guy if she sees him as just a friend because she thinks he is just saying that to be nice. In order for her to take it seriously, it needs to come from the object of her affection. Hundreds of guys can tell us we look great (or not so great), but the one who holds our heart is the one who has the power to show us how beautiful we are to HIM. It's a woman thing.

I find, often, there are people who love to find themselves in a sea of selfpity. Confidence is what is lacking here.

Because no matter how much encouragement you give her she'll never be Y. shes going to evenutally realize her own path, style, look, which ever, and once shes comfortable in them then thats when she'll be able to start accepting encouragment.

self pity (like justme said) is a huge thing. its hard to think good about yourself and you don't really like anything about yourself.
