As soon as I have grass I well remember that.
Do you have a mower with a bag? Use the bag to collect the chopped grass from the mower exhaust and then dump these pilings on the muddy/nongrass area...grass will start to grow in about a week, and every time you cut the grass keep putting it over that area it will grow faster...its similar to putting hay over the area but the cut grass is cheap and free to put over all you have to do is mow the lawn.....:)

Gotta be totally honest with you, I don't know anybody using tools like that:p
How about a trowel? I know women who cake it on so thick...they've gotta be using a trowel.

Woman/Clown: "Hey, how do I look?"

Nuke: "I dunno, take the mask off and let me see..."

Maybe get some clippings from neighbors who cut their lawns?

So, I'm having to do my backyard because well, there is no grass. And there is quite a bit of pock marks where the builders went into the backyard. I know I'll probably have to do some grading. Does anyone have any advice?
I live in Florida where all my plants to survive needs to be in POTS. I enjoy the pots in ocean colors and fill them with tropical plants. Grass is sparse as seriously the sands takes over my yard, so I think I am not too qualified to help unless you too are in Florida. Then I say start with a Frangie Pangie tree. Love them and if it breaks, you just shove the broken piece in a pot and it starts a whole new tree.
