Okay, so...here is my example. My hair did not change, my shirt did not change, nothing changed besides my makeup. I felt really weird not smiling all the way, but, sometimes a smile can make the picture and I didn't want that, I wanted the focus to be on the makeup and the makeup alone. I also did not look at the camera; I tried that, and it looked like I was peering into your soul since I wasn't really smiling. Though I feel kind of awkward, posting a giant picture of three of my face. This is me stepping out of my comfort zone. :p

I tried to get natural lighting, but since there is snow outside, it makes everything brighter, which is why my skin tone seemed to change in the last picture, I didn't add anything on my face there. I am that pale, though...

First picture: No makeup at ALL.
Second picture: Mascara ONLY and covered up blemishes on chin ONLY
Third picture: More eye makeup (some liner and shadow) but still going for a natural-er look.

See the difference?

Just my personal opinion, but I feel that in the first picture, I either look 12 years old or more manly, and so I always wear at least mascara. However, what you prefer is what you prefer, and that is okay as well. :)
Rachel you are sooo pretty first of all!
you in no way look manly!

I am like you and prefer a little mascara and sometimes eye shadow... But like you did it here really tasteful.
Honestly you could do either three and be the prettiest girl anyplace you go. I'd think the middle would be more everyday if it makes you feel happy having the mascara, it does bring our eyes out. The third for special stuff.. But none at all is beautiful too.

Basically I think what you illustrated (besides the fact that you are gorgeous) is that when done properly and tastefully make up is fine if we like it. Yet in absolutely no way a must...

Your eyes are awesome so I see why you like to accentuate them.

Lots of love,
lexi

You guys are just soooo twisted. I don't know what I've done to deserve this :p
For "mating opportunities", didn't ya know?

-> Dominance hierarchy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Dominance hierarchy arises when members of a social group interact, often aggressively, to create a ranking system. In social living groups, members are likely to compete for access to limited resources and mating opportunities. Rather than fight each time they meet, relative relationships are formed between members of the same sex. These repetitive interactions lead to the creation of a social order that is subject to change each time a dominant animal is challenged by a subordinate one."

Did I just read Pipp referred to as a limited resource?

She indeed is, in all the people I've known none have as much love and kindness... Pipp is clearly a resource of how to live and love in Christ's teachings.

The world truly could use more Pipp!

I used to be on of those people who wouldn't leave the house without my hair and makeup done. These days, I do not wear makeup to work, to the gym, to prayer meeting or the local grocery store. I do wear make up to church, for special occasions and when I go to the shopping mall with my mum or friends.

But basically, if you want a female who is completely comfortable in her natural appearance, then what you're really looking for is a female unaffected by the world, rejection and people's opinions. Show me a young woman who hasn't had their self-worth shattered at some point in her life. It seems unrealistic to tell a woman that she looks good without makeup and think its going to reach the core or the centre of her heart when there is a well of hurt residing there. I would love to be the person who can say 'no' to make up completely, but I think its going to take years and years of healing before I get there.

I was physically abused for years by my mother and my father often told me how much of a disappointment I was in his colourful choice of language. I thought there was something completely horrible and ugly about me for years and years and that I had to find a way to hide this from the world. Make-up was my mask, my comforter, and my saviour. I felt like I could change who I was through it. It sounds ridiculous, but media holds make-up as some holy saviour, here to set you free from yourself. I took the bait, gladly.

When I came to the Lord, such a remarkable peeling away took place, so much pain and rejection was plucked out of my heart, but the fact is, I'm not there yet. We can look at the case of 'make-up' as some boxed up, clean cut issue, but its not. Its really not. For most women, it means something much, much more. Whether it is a creativity thing, or a formality thing, or a case of 'I need a mask to hide' thing.

I often see girls with a thick layer of makeup on, and the term for them around these parts is 'pancake face'. I used to say that and laugh... but now I wonder, how much hurt and pain did it take to get her there? What kind of words and lies is she holding in her heart to think that she needs that?

Even though you look pretty in all three pictures, you only added A LITTLE BIT of makeup, and that's all that should be done. Very tasteful. :)

And manly??? Lol not at all.

Questions for the females:
- Do you wear makeup? Why or why not? If you don't, do you wear it for special occasions or not at all?

Not on a daily basis, but for special occasions I put on a little bit and go for the "natural look" that has been discussed so much in this thread. :) The only time I wear "heavy" makeup is when it's part of a costume, such as when I am performing in a stage play, or when I'm cosplaying as a certain character. In these cases, the makeup is specifically designed to make me look like someone else, so I feel completely fine slathering it on :p

- Do you feel comfortable going out in public without makeup? Why or why not?

Yes, I do. Though I don't wear makeup, I do care about looking presentable, so I invest in my skin care through the use of good lotions/face washes/sunscreen etc.

- What do you think is "too much" makeup?

It depends on the context. What may be considered by many to be "too much" for daily use might actually be appropriate for formal occasions. Generally, though, I think when the makeup itself is drawing more attention than the woman's face, it's too much.

- How do you feel when you get "done up"?

I admit that I do feel a little extra pretty. :) Despite the fact that I feel comfortable going bare-faced, when I put on a little makeup I tend to just focus on adding a little bit of brightness around my eyes and I like the way it looks.

For both:
- What do you think society/culture says about women and the expectation of makeup?

I am speaking of modern American culture rather than Christian culture, but I believe there is an expectation that makeup is part of making a woman look presentable in public or the workplace, much like combing the hair and wearing clean clothing. To be honest, I would never want to work for any company that told me I had to wear makeup as part of looking presentable. This happened to my mother when she was my age, and I know other women who have experienced this.

- A friend of mine said that the quote "Guys like girls to go all natural, no makeup" actually means "they like already naturally pretty girls". Thoughts on this?

I think it's a unfair to men, and makes them seem shallow. My boyfriend doesn't like makeup because he feels like it hides the girl's face. Before anyone gets riled up about that, bear in mind he grew up in Taiwan. There, the use of makeup is on a whole different level. A woman wearing no makeup or even a minimalistic "natural look" is EXTREMELY rare, and most girls there put on so much makeup on a DAILY basis that makes them completely unrecognizable. Online forums are flooded with questions like "when can I let him see my real face?", and they even have GAME SHOWS where girls take off all their makeup and their boyfriends compete to see if they can identify which woman is their girlfriend. Btw, they often get it WRONG.

I'd take a clear picture without makeup, but I don't have a high-res cam, and it's so late, the dark circles under my eyes would be the highlight of the pic! :p

I love heavy eyeliner on a woman. Aside from that,I think 99.9999999% of women look waaaaaaaaaaay better w/out makeup.
In the end it's her choice,if she wants to wear it because it makes her feel pretty,meh...whatever. I would never tell a woman (or anyone for that matter) what they should or shouldn't wear. I know I sound a bit liberal, but it's really not an issue to me. I do however think it's a sin for a woman not to bake me cookies, pies, cupcakes,or other assorted pastries. Just sayin'. :p
