One you put your injured arm or leg in and the other you use as a weapon to kill a giant.
Actually, I am quite sure that it was a 'sling' that David used to kill Goliath - I believe the [handheld] 'slingshot' was invented in more recent times...

A 'sling' (as a weapon) is a rope/strap/string having a 'pouch' attached near the center.

You hold one end (the longer one) firmly with the "last three fingers" of your hand - and, with stone in pouch - and, other end held by the thumb and forefinger (of that same hand) - you twirl/whirl it around - and, at some particular point in the rotation - you let go of the [short] end of the sling - hurling the stone out of the pouch into whatever trajectory it will go at that point in time.

A 'slingshot' is a 'Y' shaped device with a stretchable material (e.g. - rubber) attached to both top/upper parts of the 'Y' - and, having a 'pouch' attached at the center.

While holding the bottom part of the 'Y' with one hand - with the other hand, you pull back the stone-in-pouch and then "let it fly"...
