Trust me, you don't. Even as ducklings they don't have much personality. When they grow up ducks are not good pets. They smell and they are usually not very sociable.

well, i sort of agree, and disagree.

growing up on a small ranch, i raised a pair of ducklings--jannie and frannie (original, i know). they ARE messy, and seem to have a knack for locating any collection of clean water, such as my baby sister's kiddie pool, and quickly transforming it into a dirty, smelly duck pond in short order.

on the upside, they're super cute when they wag their curly-feathered tails at you (and an impression that i apparently began perfecting quite early on, as my grandparents seldom failed to capture in more than one childhood movie starring me).

they're also more "flock bound" than chickens which simply makes them easier to keep and turn loose. they stick together, even if it's to splash one another and bathe in a filthy 1' diameter mud puddle.

and then of course there are duck eggs, which are entirely delicious and well worth the trouble of keeping the messy ducks.

duck eggs taste like the chicken's immature, richer cousin. : )

oh and one more thing. they're a lot smarter than turkeys--they're really dumb. one year i left the sprinklers running on the lawn and two of our turkeys drowned.

true story.

gypsygirl: It's not hard to be smarter than a turkey. Domestic turkeys, you have to teach them how to eat. And the smell! Makes me almost thankful for my fast-food-factory job.

I have had duck eggs by the way. They are good. Not better than chicken eggs, or worse, just different.

Our family had two ducks for sometime. If you haven't had duck eggs, they do take some getting used too (they are richer and have a different flavour) but after having one or two, your taste-buds say, "Hey, these are pretty good!"

Shouryu: She wiped your whole party out twice? Who were you using? There are online strategies you can look up. gamefaqs.com is a good place.

they make bad pets. They are wild, and have way too much engergy for normal people. It's like having a pet ozelot I think
They are better than most large felines. Tigers, lions, ocelots, panthers, no matter how tame you think they are you never know if or when they might decide to take a swipe at you. At least servals can be counted on to not try to maul you. But you are right, they have way too much energy for most people. But they are cute... and good natured... It's about like getting a feline version of a border collie for a pet, you gotta keep him exercised or he'll go nuts.

DuchessAimee: Wow, congrats! I work at a fast food factory so I can't afford to send you a present, but I can send my best wishes. Sorry to hear about the diabetes thing. I don't have diabetes myself but it runs... no, it fairly gallops through my family. Hope Carly doesn't mind you having a medical problem...

Did the IRS say how long you had been married? That might help pinpoint how and why it happened. :D

(Yes, all of the above was strictly facetious. Seriously, I do hope they get the mistake cleared up soon. Good luck.)
By the way, I'd like to correct one thing... the part about diabetes galloping through my family was not in fact facetious. That part is true. I just hope I don't get it. Unfortunately I really like chocolate, and I have been gaining weight lately... fortunately the chocolate I like is very dark chocolate, like 85% cocoa, so that's not TOO bad I guess.

It was 1996, and my first time getting that far in the game. Don't have the issue any more, as you can imagine.

Ah, that also explains why the duck left when he did. Back then it took a while to bring up a BBS page on a dial-up connection. Remember when 900 baud was blazing fast? ;)

Lol! This story reminds me of the funny turkey movie "free birds". Only one turkey was a little smart but not really that smart, just always lucky he was even declared as the pardoned turkey( spared from being a thanksgiving turkey).

Great moments in real life irony:

Me: Remind me again what the workshop next week is on

Guy giving announcement about workshop: Um… Er… Uh...

Other person in room: Communication

Me: (unrestrained laughter)

Further irony: when I tried to post this the first time I lost communication with the internet.

This turkey talk reminds me of The Book of the Dun Cow. The turkeys were hilarious... the animals needed to build wall around their farm, and the turkeys refused to move, so they had to be built into the wall. Ah. Good times.

i can't believe i forgot to mention that probably my second favorite childhood books was about a duck (actually, now that i think about it, all my favorite childhood books were about animals).

anyway, the book is called, the story about ping. i LOVED that book.

amazon's summary:

The tale of a little duck alone on the Yangtze River,
The Story About Ping is a sweet and funny book with wonderfully rich and colorful illustrations. On a day like any other, Ping sets off from the boat he calls home with his comically large family in search of "pleasant things to eat." On this particular day, he is accidentally left behind when the boat leaves. Undaunted, the little duck heads out onto the Yangtze in search of his family, only to find new friends and adventures--and a bit of peril--around every bend.

gee, who knew a story of abandonment could inspire such a beloved tale? ; p

I tried duck eggs once and they were good. I even liked turkey eggs.

On a different note, what about a pet panda? Warning: This video is an overdose of cuteness. :D

I'm so glad I'm out of high school. Can't stand Common Core. I don't know whether I should look into getting a teaching degree or not.

There's a big effort going on now with people and some politicians coming together to get common core removed/revoked. Threre is even a federal lawsuit being filed by a governor to get common core repealed. Hopefully by the time you get your degree it will be gone.
