If you were to describe what it is to miss something or someone, how does that really sound out to you?

I'd love to hear your analytical thoughts on the anatomy of missing.
Missing is knowing that all you have are memories.. until you meet again..

I let my skin get too thin
I'd like to pause
No matter what I pretend
Like some pilgrim who learns to transcend
Learns to live as if each step was the end.

Time stand still
I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
Time stand still
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now.

Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger

Experience slips away.

I turn my face to the sun
Close my eyes
Let my defenses down
All those wounds
That I can't get unwound

I let my past go too fast
No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain
Whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide
Comes around

Make each impression
A little bit stronger
Freeze this motion
A little bit longer

The innocence slips away.

Summer's going fast
Nights growing colder
Children growing up
Old friends growing older

Experience slips away.
The innocence slips away.

- lyrics by Neil Peart (Rush) - yes, the same guy who did Anatomy of a Drum Solo! :)

Thank you all for your thoughts. Especially those of you who went beyond the question.

I'm probably going to ponder this one for a while, so if you have any future brainwaves, please post them here :)

So I'm guessing you're username has nothing to do with the band..

I should have known better...

oh contraire good sir. Just a little tunnel visioned on the topic.
I wanted a band reference username that was both an awesome classic band, without giving a negative impression. My first idea was Extreme, but I went with the slightly less pushy sounding name.
And while Rush isn't my favourite band, its pretty amazing - not that it has anything to do with the topic like the cleverly selected song you posted, I just can't go past some Tom Sawyer.

Why did you have to ask such a difficult question?

As some others have said, it is like something that was part of oneself is gone.
For instance, before I went to Scotland, I had wanted to go there for so long, that I was in love with it before I went.
I really miss the villages, churches, ruins, hills, even the ever- changing weather. I never missed Norway when I moved there, but I miss Scotland now that I returned to Norway. It sort of feels like home. Like I should be there.

I feel the same way about the place where I grew up, like that was more my home. Now I live on the other side of the country.

Not sure about sharing my 'analytical' thought on the subject but I got a story about what it means to missing someone. My family was traveling, stopping by Mount Rushmore (it was pre-reconstruction where you can only see those gigantic faces from a distance), and there I realized that I missed my friend from church youth group. She was a close friend, actually one who hooked me up with her friend in a blind date, and I thought she was just a close friend that I felt comfortable with. Guess she was just more than a close friend to me, at least subconsciously, and I wasn't even aware of that until I was away. I used, I don't know how many quarters, and called her from the phone booth next to a souvenir shop. I don't remember whether I got connected or not but I still vividly remember the feeling, realizing how I missed her, her being and her presence and wanted to just hear her voice.

Still feeling "bleh," so I'm going to pull a zeroturublence and reference another Rush song that I think may be relevant:

All my nerves are naked wires
Tender to the touch
Sometimes super sensitive
But who can care too much?
I get this feeling

Scars of pleasure, scars of pain
Atmospheric changes make them sensitive again

Each emotional injury
Leaves behind its mark
Sometimes they come tumbling out
Like shadows in the dark
I get this feeling

When I think about all I have seen
And all I'll never seen
When I think about the people
Who have opened up to me
I get this feeling

Scars of pleasure, scars of pain
Atmospheric changes make them sensitive again

Pleasure leaves a fingerprint
As surely as mortal pain
In memories they resonate
And echo back again

Scars of pleasure, scars of pain
Atmospheric changes make them sensitive again

Man, I lent that cd to someone years and years ago and never got it back. Now I don't even recognize the songs from it anymore. :( Actually, it was a cassette!

It has kind of a "Roll the Bones" sound to it. Not one of my favorite albums by them, but the bass solo from "Show Don't Tell" has got to be one of my favorites by GeeLee.

I have show don't tell. I was thinking that was from test for echo.

Just googled it. Apparently its from Presto. Makes sense now. I watched the video and recognize it again. :) I just never knew the lyrics..
