I am currently mid-way through a very intriguing, yet also a very heart-breaking book entitled "The True History of the Elephant Man - The Definitive Account of the Tragic and Extraordinary Life of Joseph Merrick" co-written by Michael Howard and Peter Ford.

This biography is about Joseph Merrick, who was a young man that suffered major physical deformities during his life (he was born in 1862 and died in 1890). Joseph had very few joyful moments in his short and extremely difficult life, and yet it's been said by those who were close to him that he had a beautiful soul and treated everyone he knew with utmost dignity and respect.

For me the most important aspect of Joseph's life was that he was a devout Christian (due in large part because of the strong Christian faith of his mother). Psalm 23 was his favorite part of the Bible, which he would often recite out loud before going to sleep.

I highly recommend this book, as well as the 1980 movie "The Elephant Man" starring John Hurt (as Merrick) and Anthony Hopkins (as Merrick's doctor). This movie is one of my all-time favorites (although there are a small hand full of inaccuracies in it - for example in the movie Merrick is called John, but his real name was Joseph). The majority of the film is true to Joseph Merrick's life story.

Here is a trailer for the movie for those of you who may not have seen the film yet.

I've just finished reading Surprised by the Holy Spirit by Lutheran pastor, Edgar Mayer. Yes, a Holy Spirit book from a Lutheran perspective! Who would've thunk? I highly recommend this book. Some of it may be old hat to charismatics but it's very eye-opening for those of us who aren't.

I've recently begun reading The Bait of Satan: Living Free from the Deadly Trap of Offense by John Bevere. It's a challenging read but so far very worthwhile. I'm taking this one slowly.

I've been reading Hacker by Ted Dekker for a long time now. I've always been one for reading fiction over non-fiction but in the last year or so I've been reading much more non-fiction. It's both encouraging and a little frustrating (I have many books to read).

This thread made a comeback?

Awesome.

So far I've read at least several I can think of in the last six or so months.

I've finished pretty much everything Dickens ever wrote. I read Pride and Predjudice (Austen is no Dickens but the book was a good read), as well as Persuasion. I can see where the female demographic gravitates towards Austen's work, although Dickens always manages to work some sort of arch villain into his work along with the inevitable marriage-at-the-end-awesome-ending.

I'm going to cram in some GK Chesterton soon I think. He had some pretty powerful words.

I just started a book called The Art of Racing in the Rain.

The narrator is the family dog. At the beginning of the story, he is old and failing, and since he can't talk, he "does stuff" (such as leaving puddles on the kitchen floor) to show his owner, a single widowed father, that it is okay to take him to the vet to end his life.

It soon goes into flashback to the dog's earlier days with the young family. He becomes the man's loyal companion through all sorts of crushed dreams and tragedies. It's one of those humorous, semi-whimsical but kind of sad, too stories.

I consistently read parts of the fantasy Xanth series by Piers Anthony. I own about 30 of the 39 books in the series and go back and re-read them from time to time, but not necessarily in any particular order. I am going to re-read one called Up in a Heaval today, yesterday I read Stork Naked, and the day before that Air Apparent.

If none of you are familiar with this series, but enjoy fantasy novels, I highly recommend them.

Sounds like what I do with Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. Some books are too good to not read again.

Well... I've been busy for a week, so I didn't get to respond to this.

I appreciate your concern, but not everything is a conspiracy, and by labeling it as such, you distract people from the things that truly do stink to high heaven. In the future, it might also be a good idea to PM someone before publicly accusing them of using an occult symbol.

This symbol isn't occult at all. It's the International Atomic Energy Agency symbol for ionizing radiation. I like nuclear power - I almost ended up being a nuclear engineer once upon a time.

Not every triangle is a pyramid...

True, mate. And not every member of CC is alright in the head. :)
