Nothing? A void of existence? Non-matter? Wait, you're there. That's Something. So by you being there, you ruin the thing that you say makes it special....

Well...ummm..it's laid back I suppose, but ummm..it's waaaay too expensive to live here,no jobs or economy to speak of,nothing entertaining to do unless all you like is nature-esque stuff. (and really, how many times can you hike or bike the same trails) The people here have no interests outside of huntin',fishin' Nascar, and all New England based sport teams. You really have no idea just how closed minded these people are here. I'm telling you..one time at work I was on my lunch break & some of my team leaders ind you were not even 3 feet from me at another table using the "N" word and saying the most ignorant statements I've ever heard against a group of people with a different skin colour...it was unreal! The crux of their comments was as they said "well it was on Fox news and at least they don't try to hide the truth about those "N" like the liberal news shows do." Unfortunately in Maine, this is far from an isolated incident...it is a very very very racist state.
Ok,maybe not "every" single person who grew up here is...but they are for the most part, very sheltered & closed minded as a whole.
I had no idea NASCAR was big in Maine! I'm in Virginia, heart of NASCAR Country, (okay, Talledega is actually the heart) But I don't have anything to do with it.

Man, I'm sorry to hear about the bigotry you've overheard though. The New York Times often refers to the South as racist, but everyone seems to get along quite well in my community. Some people will never learn, I guess.

We're all full of something. Today, for me, just happens to be it. Whatever 'it' is. Wait.. what are you trying to say Mr Gibson?

I was quite shocked too, finding out Nascar was so popular here. Unfortunately I think much of the closed mindedness here in the state is due to the location. Because Maine doesn't get much "through-traffic" many of the people here don't get to meet people too often that speak various other languages or that have other skin colours. The people here are tight knit families...generation upon generation that have never moved around or out of state. Many are very content & feel safe in their bubble. I'm not knocking people who love Nascar,or who hunt & fish,or people that love the Red Sox,or heck...even people who are super into living near & hanging with all their family members 24/7. I have a hard time dealing with people who are mean spirited to other's over things like the way they speak or skin colour. Even if I weren't a christian that sort of ignorance drives me crazy. (sorry to derail yer' thread Cris)

The reason why Pittsburgh is special is its Pittsburgh. Anyone who lives here will agree. Too many special things to list in one forum post.
