So I'm catholic and I know that the Catholic Church teaches that birth control of any kind is a sin, but most Protestant churches allow it. So is it a sin? It prevents conception so it goes against the natural purpose of sex. But how can you enjoy sex during marriage without getting pregnant every time you have sex if you're not allowed to use birth control? Any help would be much appreciated!

So does not having sex.

In fact, having sex when you're least fertile is also an attempt to prevent contraception.

Women are more fertile after their period, so many people will tell you to count the days until you're least fertile and have sex then. Of course, waiting to have sex when a woman is least fertile is also a form of contraception in which two people attempt to have sex without getting the woman pregnant. So if condoms and pills are a sin because it's an attempt to use sex for pleasure without intent of making a baby, then so is relying on a calendar based system.

I'm personally not a Christian though, but it's something to think about. There was another thread similar to this one a while back I read where most of the Christians who responded were perfectly okay with contraceptives being used: http://christianchat.com/christian-family-forum/100283-contraception.html

If anyone honestly believes contraception shouldn't be used for sex because sex is supposed to be for making babies, then they should ditch the calendar method and ONLY have sex when they want to actually have children! Of course, who only wants to have sex on 2 or 3 occasions during their entire marriage?

There are ways to work the odds. However, removing the possibility of creating life out of love is sinful.

Sorry, but your logic contradicts itself.

It's a sin to have sex for pleasure alone. You have to have sex with the intent of bearing a child. Right?

If you try to play the odds, then you're attempting to have sex for pleasure while trying to avoid bearing a child. According to your own logic, that must also be a sin.

Get your head on straight! You're suggesting people be irresponsible about sex and bear more children than they can comfortably take care of, or even have children when they aren't ready. And if you pull the "God decides when they're ready", then why do you think it's okay for a man to have sex with his wife only when she's least fertile? If God decides when you have a child, then why does it matter if you wait until your wife is least fertile or most fertile before having sex? It's like you're trying to outsmart God.

Your logic is flawed. DO NOT PASS GO, DO NOT COLLECT $200.

I believe Colin is Catholic. So that would explain his response.

Just for fyi; The pill does not prevent conception. After conception, the egg must implant in the uterus to grow. The pill prevents the implantation of the fertilized egg. Conception occurs, but you pass the zygote and don't become pregnant.

Actually you missed the logic. Remember the word, "Possiblity". So, yes a married couple can have sex for pleasure, they can even try to decrease the odds based upon the woman's menstrual cycle, and YET the possibility to create life is still there.

Also, until the 1920s when contraception became legal in most states, almost all Protestant churches preached against birth control.

...Um...you just described abortion. I think you mean Conception does not occur, because conception is a fertilized egg. So...to destroy the life that was just created...that's abortion.

I am. I don't deny that. I simply am replying to this thread because the OP said she is Catholic. If she wasn't I wouldn't have posted, unless asked my opinion.

Exactly. With the pill conception may occur - the egg becomes fertilized. The fertilized egg is then aborted because it's not allowed by the medication to implant in the womb. That's why it's an important fyi to consider in these discussions.

I'm not married yet, but I'm planning to only use birth control methods that don't allow the spermatozoid (?) to reach the ovule (???) {#toolazytogoogletheword} like condoms, or the calendar method.

To me, pills are to close to the posibility of creating an abortion, and they damage the female reproductive system too

So what? As long as you're trying to decrease the chances of making a baby, you're having sex for pleasure instead of procreation. The intent of not having a child is still there. It's that intent that supposedly makes it a sin.
