I'm on a Performing Arts course, in my last of two years now so I'll be leaving in a couple of weeks. I'm going on to do a two year dance course so I can get more dance training but in my second year of that course I'm going to be applying for some of the top Musical Theatre colleges in England such as Laine Theatre Arts, Bird College, Urdang Academy etc. so hopefully after five years I'll be touring with professional companies such as David Ian Productions or in a West End show. My favourite musical is Flashdance the Musical and I'd love the chance to play the lead role in Flashdance which is Alex Owens - I've seen Flashdance three times by the way, the closing night was last night and I saw it - Amazing! The problem is that theres swearing in scripts such as Flashdance and Alex swears a bit - not thousands of times but you know what I mean. This year we did Jack The Ripper at college and that had quite a bit of swearing in it and I was asked to read in for people when people werent there as I was stage management but as I don't swear when I got to the lines with swearing in them I'd really wonder what to do, I didn't want to get into trouble for not doing my job properly but also I didn't want to swear so I always end up trying to find an alternative word that isn't swearing. The one thing I don't want if I make it is to get an amazing role like Alex Owens and get fired because I won't swear but I don't want to swear. What would you do in this situation?

You should see the musical version. There were rumours they were taking it to America but its going to West End in 2010. I think the only other thing I could would be to ask them to change the line. My friend played understudy for Jimmy Kaminsky (he was written especially for the musical version) and the second time I saw it was Aaron's first time playing Jimmy infront of an audience as Bruno was ill and I noticed Aaron fluffed his lines from nerves and nearly swore, Aaron's not the kind to go round swearing for the sake of it though but he managed to make it sound like he was meant to say it. I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen it a first time before Aaron played Jimmy.

Flashdance is such an inspiring musical though. Dunno if you've heard of twitter but I've been talking to Victoria Hamilton-Barritt who played Alex Owens over twitter and said how much the whole cast and the musical have inspired me. I spoke to her last night at the stage door after the performance as well. I told her I wanted to be the next Alex Owens hahaha she loved it, she cracked up with amusement. I suggested to her that they adapt the script for the West End show in 2010 and include a mini Alex so I can play the younger version hahahaha, she loved the idea. But yeah - I'd love to have the privilige to play Alex Owens, if not Gloria will do til the role of Alex is available hahaha.

If you're acting, you do what you must. Technically, you aren't swearing, your character is. It isn't you, right?

Moreover, we must seriously analyze the nature of language here. What is language beyond a series of complex grunts? Replacing a "bad word" with something else doesn't remove the connotation or emotion you're trying to convey, it's all the same when you boil it down to connotation.

I say, swear for the performance. If you're not comfortable doing it, perhaps you should be a background dancer.

It was really weird, the other day Victoria posted about how inappropriate it was for people to swear on Facebook and Twitter yet the characters she's had such as Carmen Diaz in Fame and Alex Owens in Flashdance have both had lines with swearing in them.

Yeah that is true that its playing another role but then ultimately its my decision. Do I go with what my heart says or do I go with what my head says? I'd go with my heart, theres alternative words you can use. I suppose if I wasn't sure whether a certain word was swearing or not I'd have to find out and if it was I'd go to a pastor and ask for their advice.

An ensemble character would be a good thing but lead role - a dream
