This is a post for all those of us who just don't like the sound of mainstream christian music, it could be for many reasons - but for me I can't take it seriously because well nearly all I have heard is really quite cheesy. This is highlighted even further I guess by the fact I was once a musician and had developed well, unique tastes through that experience. Please do not take this as a personal attack if you like mainstream christian music, I am merely sharing what I like with any others who find themsleves in a situation similar to mine. So here is a few artists I have come to really like, who write organic and original sounding christian music, they cross genre quite a bit:

Ben Harper (soul, reggae) :D
Matisyahu (reggae, soul)
Living Sacrifice (death metal)
Seventh Angel (death metal)

*matisyahu is jewish yes I know, but he sings of the same god that we worship, so I felt he was valid to add to the list

Only a few artists I know, if you can think of anyone else who you feel breaks the mould (successfully) of christian music then please feel free to add, always excited to hear more stuff, also have a listen and give me some feedback, I'd love to hear your opinions!:)

I personally love
For Today (metal worship)
I am Alpha and Omega (hardcore worship)
Bradly Hathaway (poet turned musician)
Showbread (crazy stuff, each CD sounds different. Age Of Reptiles by them, its my favorite worship song)
This is Age Of Reptiles. It is a 2 parter song, I could only find the first part.

When one says Mainstream I think 'rock', but actually there's alot of Choir and Quartet, Pop and Alternative Rock that get alot of buzz.
Flyleaf ftw though ^_^

I'm with you on that. I am a formally trained musician (percussionist) and I feel the same way about mainstream christian music, even though I have a liking for many forms of music from rock to classical. I do not like rap though. Even before I became christian I didn't like rap. I often wondered what it is I didnt like about it and found that if you listen to its syncopation and rythyms it sounds just like someone who is on an aggressive verbal attack (someone rudely accusing, angrily berating, etc..). No offense to rap fans, of course.

hm. I've also felt the same way about most rap. I've tried to acquire a taste for it but I most of it IS like that. There's a "Positive Hip Hop and Rap" station on Pandora.com that doesn't have music like that on it, for the most part. You should check it out.

Anyways, I heard that one song, "Mouth like a Magazine" by Showbread a few years back and really liked it but the rest of the songs didn't sit with me well. I'll give them another try, though.

I'll be keeping an eye out on this thread. I like listening to recommendations and new stuff. TY

I like Mouth like a Magazine too but it's mean...:<
I mean, kind of bitter and hateful, I guess. Makes me feel bad for liking the song but I really like the music more than the lyrics ^^

I don't think it is bitter and hateful. They are just musically expressing something that happens to all of us, and we can relate. Also it makes you take a step back and look at yourself.
most of Showbread's lyrics are like that.
if you don't like controversy then don't listen to them.
They get kicked out of churches because they sing about the issues Christians are afraid to address, and they bluntly sing about them in their songs.
They are not for everyone, but they REALLY make you think.
I have become a better person because of their music.

for me any band who would call them selfs a worship band is serious about what they do. other than that its all the same dont not listen to it! but make sure you play worship music in the mornings or at night or something and listen to mainstream less seriously...

i love music i and i would never give up mainstream music, this is my passion... just because ones a Christian does not mean they have to make Christan music. like the band "one republic" they dont claim to be Christan but there message is non-treating.

I totally agree with you Strider.. I was convinced that God wanted me to get rid of all my unchristian music when I was a teen. I burnt a lot of good cd's.. I really regret that. God speaks in a lot of different ways, not just through so called christian music... he even used a donkey once

Matisyahu is awesome.

I don't listen to most Christian music, it just doesn't appeal to me. Most of it does seem cheesy and in some ways generic and insincere. Not all mind you.
