Matthew 1

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Matthew 1

The Genealogy of Jesus the Messiah

1 The [a]record of the genealogy of [b]Jesus [c]the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2 Abraham [d]was the father of Isaac, [e]Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of [f]Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of [g]Ram. 4 Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon. 5 Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse. 6 Jesse was the father of David the king.
David was the father of Solomon by [h]Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. 7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of [i]Asa. 8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of [j]Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah. 9 Uzziah was the father of [k]Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of [l]Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah. 11 Josiah became the father of [m]Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
12 After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of [n]Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel was the father of [o]Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor. 14 Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud. 15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob. 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called [p]the Messiah.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to [q]the Messiah, fourteen generations.
Conception and Birth of Jesus

18 Now the birth of Jesus [r]Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been [s]betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned [t]to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for [u]the Child who has been [v]conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for [w]He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this [x]took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME [y]IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.” 24 And Joseph [z]awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 [aa]but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

Hmmm I dunno if I think much about it >.> it just seems to mainly be genealogy and a brief description on the birth of Jesus >.> how 'bout everyone else?

well the 14 generations thing i think is interesting. How the Lord thought ahead to space history like that. and how God deliberately included the genealogy to show that Yeshua was the RIGHTFUL heir to the throne of David. i dunno. i have loved for a while that Miriam and Joseph had no sexual union until after Yeshua was born. it's really cool bc Yeshua got to be in a completely pure vessel. untainted womb...so to speak. some people think that's a bit too graphic but i really like it.

Oh I thought you were saying that we were going to discuss the cahpter we read on the chatrooms o_O haha nevermind, I read Matthew 3 today and I found these verses interesting:

Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. Mathew 3:8-9

I liked how the NLT translated it.

Sometimes I wish I could've seen the faces of the Pharisees when John called them ''brood of snakes'' but that's another thought...

^_^ ehh we're all on at different times i am sure <3 yeah you're right. i do wonder how they took such confrontation. no one says things like that in our day and age. i guess i'm thinking about. why did God need a preparer. one to announce the Savior's arrival 'on the scene'

why did God set up this scene with a partner in John. why did God set him apart as he did.
why did he live like a wild man in the desert, and not with the people?

I heard all kings have heralds back then announcing their arrival as they traveled from place to place

Also John the Baptist was prophecies in the OT as well. His birth fulfilled prophecy.

Isaiah 40:3
New King James Version (NKJV)
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make straight in the desert[a]
A highway for our God.

Matthew 3
New King James Version (NKJV)
John the Baptist Prepares the Way

3 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:

“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord;
Make His paths straight.’”[a]
4 Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

Chapter 3: He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire, hallelujah!
3:16
As well if you're reading this, and know Jesus as Lord and Saviour, God's saying similarly about you right now, that's my beloved child, in them I'm well pleased!!!!!!!! :)

ps. If you don't know Jesus as Lord and Saviour yet, there's no better time than now! We might have to stand before God this day, I wouldn't want to try that without Christ
