one thing is - guilt and shame are not from God. God never condemns a saved person.
The truth is guilt and shame aren't things we get rid of by our own self-effort.. but by allowing the Holy Spirit to work on our hearts.
The addiction and sin cycle kind of goes like this:
I am feeling bad.. so I take alchohol, drugs or access porn.. whatever it is.. to get rid of the bad feeling.
What is the outcome of doing this? feeling bad again because the relief is only temporary or because you feel bad about the behaviour.. so I go back to the alchohol, drugs or porn to relieve the bad feeling..
and the cyle continues..
the script changes when you don't condemn yourself.. realising teh Holy Spirit will convict.. but never condemn.
So the pattern goes.. I am feeling bad and decide to take drugs etc to relieve the feeling.. afterwards I feel strongly convicted that the behaviour is hurting me and the Holy Spirit and I get put off doing the thing again. I feel elated because I haven't done it again. I experience a positive pattern of behaviour where I feel blessed because I didn't give in when feeling bad.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
