I think women should be able to wear w/e they want (to an extent, of course.) We as men should control ourselves and not lust after them, and women should do the same for men. It's wrong to say "oh you women should put on baggier clothing b/c I'm looking at your breasts." How ridiculous does that sound? That's pretty much what we're telling women to do. Carry on, ladies, we men will learn to control ourselves.
Yes, we should control ourselves, but, women, or men wearing revealing clothes is not helpful and personally I do not appreciate it.

You can dress very nicely (And inexpensively!) without encouraging lust, and really there is no reason in christian circles to dress to attract lust. A woman's beauty should come from within, something about a quiet and gentle spirit I think. :) And really, what kind of men do you want to attract?

There is a verse somewhere that sums this up, I don't know where it is unfortunately, but whoever causes a brother to sin would be better to be thrown into a lake with a millstone attached around their neck.

So, do be mindful of your christian brothers.

I think society puts to much of the pressure on the women, guys need to take responsibility for their eyes and their actions.

I must ask, why, as a christian you would be dressing provocatively Frankenstein?

I agree with you - guys need to control our eyes and actions, it is our responsibility. But, why would you want to dress in a way that is unhelpful to us?

All guys struggle with lust, married and unmarried, any guy that says he doesn't is lying. Here is a little passage, it is referring to meat but I think it is relevant to this situation.

Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you who have this knowledge eating in an idol’s temple, won’t he be emboldened to eat what has been sacrificed to idols? 11So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.

Paul here says that if something he eats causes a brother to fall into sin he will never eat again. So, while you have the freedom to dress as you please and ultimately it is the guys responsibility, why would you want to put a stumbling block in front of him in the exercise of your freedom?

I dont feel I dress provocatively. I still believe that too much pressure is put on the women. You can not please everyone. A women could wear boxy clothes and show none of their shape and someone out their will still something wrong with it. I dress how I feel comfortable, for me and no one else.

Guys will look at girls REGARDLESS of what she's wearing unless she's in like a burka. And if a woman feels the most empowered/comfortable in something that has slight cleavage and not a turtleneck, I support that.

It's not about feeling empowered or comfortable it's about helping our fellow christians get to heaven and not be a stumbling block. It may be that guys need to try and control their minds but no one is perfect so we just need to help instead of drag someone down.

i think the way u dress, what u say , whatever u do it all starts in the heart , if Jesus is there it will reflect in the way u dress, behave , what u say etc..
I agree 100 % with this.

Modesty isn't just for women it's for men too.
I think you are mistaken. The only thing a male needs to cover is his genitals and rear. At the beach, men where just trunks and show full chest. This will forever be acceptable. I feel sorry for the women that must cover up at the beach, because it feels wonderful to be in the water without a top. Oh well. You have to do what you have to do.

Haha I know, I went there in six grade with my parents. There was this one girl topless sunbathing who kept like noticeably trying to get my dad to notice her. My mother thought it was funny. XD

Modesty does not just refer to how one dresses, or being covered to keep the men around us from sinning, but is much more than that. It is an issue of the heart, and therefore should be depicted in our dress, our speech, or actions, etc. Unfortunately, for most people modesty has gone down the drain.

I think it needs to be a self control issue honestly. Trust me, I've learned from experience, that a great deal of modesty has to do with the individual. Not just with the way that one dresses, but the way one acts, and represents themselves. For example, as a man I choose to avert my eyes from staring at the chest of a woman, do I notice? Of course, but there is no need to stare. The way that you dress, does represent you, for better or worse. In a less physical way, one's modesty can mean not being overly prideful. If you make a donation to charity, don't tout it to everyone you meet, but be content that God knows, and allow your reward to be in Heaven, not Earth.

I used to not think it was even possible to look at the opposite gender without lustful eyes, but it is. By the grace of God we can all overcome our baseness.

Its interesting that people in a christian chat room would disagree with what the bible says. I dont really understand.

I think its important to dress modestly which doesn't necessarily mean sloppy. But nicely not really flashy either... this is something I personally struggle with. I am not really sure what i should wear anymore. I want to dress nicer but its sometimes hard because I ride my bike a lot and I work with children. I think I am dressing alright.

I think Both men and women has their own responsibilities.. women should dress appropriately for their country. While men shouldn't stare. What u call modesty in the USA is vulgar in India.. so yea.. It depends.. But I think Both male and female needs to play their parts.

Thank you everyone :) Modesty is not only a sign of self respect but also a gift & not a temptation. You wouldn't want to be the reason your brother/ sister is stumbling? dressing immodestly is a temptation that Satan loves to use against Christians. :)
SERIOUSLY. Amen.

Stop tempting.
